We are seeking talented engineers to join our team, in Filton, UK. As a Test Bench engineer, you are part of the Engineering team to support the development of the Hydrogen Test Facility at Filton with the focus on Operations and Safety aspects, including Industrial Risk Assessment.
The role
* Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive Safe System of Work (SSoW) for the hydrogen testing facility to control high-risk activities and ensure that all work is performed safely and in compliance with established Procedures.
* Conduct detailed risk assessments for all activities involving hydrogen, nitrogen and related systems, identifying potential hazards and implementing effective control measures.
* Ensure that all risk assessments are up-to-date and reviewed regularly, particularly when changes to operations or equipment occur.
* Collaborate with test engineers, technicians, and other stakeholders to ensure that risk assessments are suitable and sufficient, and that all risks are adequately mitigated.
* Ensure that all systems and processes comply with relevant safety regulations, industry standards, and best practices, including but not limited to ATEX, DSEAR, and relevant hydrogen safety standards.
* Develop and deliver training programs to ensure all personnel are competent in using the SSoW and Permit to Work (PTW) systems.
* Keep up to date with changes in safety legislation and standards and implement necessary updates to the SSoW / PTW systems.
* Provide ongoing support and guidance to staff on safety matters, ensuring a high level of safety awareness across the facility.
* Ensure that lessons learned from incident investigations are captured and corrective actions are implemented.
* Lead incident investigations related to safety system failures and develop strategies to prevent recurrence.
* Continuously monitor the effectiveness of the SSoW and PTW systems, making improvements as necessary to enhance safety performance.
Are you the one?
Experience required:
* You hold a bachelors degree in safety engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline. A relevant safety certification (e.g. NEBOSH, IOSH) is preferred.
* Minimum of 5 years of experience in a safety engineering role, preferably within the hydrogen industry or another high-hazard sector.
* Proven experience in designing and implementing Safe Systems of Work and Permit to Work systems in a complex technical environment.
* Extensive knowledge of risk assessment methodologies and experience in conducting and leading risk assessments for high-risk activities.
* Experience of Project Management is desirable.

* Strong understanding of hydrogen safety, including the properties of gaseous and liquid hydrogen, and the associated risks.
* Excellent knowledge of safety regulations and industry standards (e.g., ATEX, DSEAR, hydrogen safety standards).
* Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating safety risks.
* You are autonomous, curious, proactive, rigorous, with great attention to detail;
* Fluent in English (verbal and written).
