Policy Adviser, Financial & Corporate Reporting

We have a fascinating role for someone with an interest in the insurance and long-term savings industry, and financial and corporate reporting in particular. The industry is incredibly diverse and varied, and so the scope of your work will be, too. In this role at the ABI, you can have a real impact on the development and implementation of accounting and reporting policy.

What’s the job?
1. This role will work closely with the Assistant Director, Head of Tax & Reporting, and other members of the department to assist in the development and implementation of policy on issues concerning financial and wider corporate reporting; and to represent industry views and interests to UK government and regulatory authorities, and other relevant parties.
2. Policy development lead on financial and wider corporate reporting issues of particular interest to UK insurers, including both international (IASB and UKEB) and domestic (FRC and DBT) issues in relation to IFRS and UK GAAP, and other aspects of insurers’ reporting through their annual reports and accounts such as their strategic reports.
3. Benefit the industry and its customers by formulating and communicating persuasive policy initiatives supported by robust evidence, that address legislative and regulatory concerns and enhance the reputation of the industry.
4. Related stakeholder engagement, internally within the ABI and with members, and externally with both UK and international (including Insurance Europe) stakeholders.
5. Policy development support on insurers’ tax issues as relating to financial reporting requirements.
6. Policy development support on prudential reporting issues (e.g., Solvency II, and IAIS initiatives) and domestic (PRA) issues.
7. Promote the aims and objectives of the ABI and help secure the outcomes and deliverables set out in the ABI Business Plan.
What skills are we looking for?
1. A qualified or part-qualified accountant (for example, a newly qualified or final exams stage ICAEW, ICAS, ACCA or similar).
2. Knowledge of the financial services industry (insurance experience preferable) and a good understanding of the UK‘s reporting environment.
3. Ability to write articulately on relevant financial reporting, wider corporate reporting and other regulatory issues tailored to the audience such as ABI members and the wider policy community.
4. Attention to detail and the capacity to understand and influence technical regulatory issues and industry developments.
5. Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to develop clear and concise messages.
6. Strong analytical, numerical and technical capabilities to deal with complex multi-layered issues with an evidence-based approach to policy making, decision making, and problem solving.
7. Enthusiasm for building and managing effective relationships with members and external stakeholders across a range of organisations.
8. Ability to gain credibility with those at senior levels within the financial services industry, government or elsewhere.
9. Ability to work with members to understand their priorities and concerns, gather evidence from them, and develop robust and credible policy positions.
10. Lobbying skills, including the ability to influence and persuade senior people in member firms, Government, regulators and elsewhere, and to argue persuasively for the industry’s interests.
11. Experience in the insurance industry, the wider financial services sector or regulation/competition policy in another sector.
12. Experience in or an understanding of UK and/or EU legislative, political and regulatory environments.
13. Good understanding of the UK‘s legislative and regulatory environment.
14. Experience, or a keen understanding of, what is required to facilitate and influence decision-making at those levels would also be beneficial.
