Job Description
A motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible individual is required to support a family in caring for their 7-year-old child. She is a delightful little girl requiring skilled support in the areas of physical disability, learning disability, developmental delay, sensory needs, and behavioral challenges, as well as in maintaining her general health and wellbeing. She has significant epilepsy with seizures that are potentially very serious in nature and hard to detect, so she requires constant monitoring and skilled intervention in seizure management.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
1. As a member of staff:
o Work within a vibrant family home, showing the sensitivity and approach required to succeed in that environment. Use initiative to optimize fun and social opportunities for the client while supporting her parents and respecting their wishes, aspirations, and ethos.
o Work with the client, professionals, school, and family to undertake duties commensurate with the post and as requested by the family, Care and Therapy Coordinator, and Case Manager.
o Provide personal care, support, and a safe environment for the client, undertaking tasks as detailed in the Working File (care plan) to ensure the optimum quality of life for the client.
o Be a professional member of the staff team, supporting colleagues as necessary and helping to maintain a positive, vibrant, friendly, and supportive workplace.
o Ensure that colleagues are fully informed of recent developments at handover time.
o Be aware of issues of safeguarding and alert the Care and Therapy Coordinator/Case Manager to any concerns regarding the client’s safety and wellbeing.
o Be reliable and punctual; alert the family at the earliest possible opportunity if unable to attend for work in an emergency or in case of illness.
o Maintain expected high standards of care and report any breaches in professional practice to the Care and Therapy Coordinator/Case Manager.
o Participate in training, team meetings, supervisions, appraisals, and any other meetings called by the Care and Therapy Coordinator/Case Manager. Availability for these meetings during the daytime is required.
2. Direct work with the client:
o Ensure dignity, respect, and privacy are maintained at all times for her and her family.
o Encourage her to live as full, active, and comfortable a life as possible, participating in social and recreational activities within the home and in the local community, considering her health and medical condition.
o Provide 1-1 support in school when required.
o Support the family during holiday periods at home and possibly abroad when required.
o Assist with all aspects of personal care and daily living (e.g., washing, bathing, dressing, continence care).
o Assist with exercises and treatment as instructed by any identified therapist or the Care and Therapy Coordinator/Case Manager, traveling to hospitals or elsewhere as needed.
o Monitor the health of the child, maintaining nutrition and physical management.
o Maintain patience and calmness at all times, following guidelines given, and acting on own initiative to deal with circumstances to the best of your ability.
o Administer any medication prescribed as agreed with the family and keep a written record of all drugs administered as per the Medication Policy.
o Maintain safety by monitoring for and intervening in the event of epileptic seizures, as well as managing her erratic sleep pattern and behavior at night.
o Complete daily records as advised.
o Drive the child’s vehicle (where applicable).
o Monitor care supplies and notify the Care and Therapy Coordinator if running low to replenish stock.
o Provide high standards of cleanliness, comfort, and homeliness at all times.
o Undertake some household duties as necessary and assist with the cleaning of specific equipment and resources.
o Show sensitivity and consideration for the wider family when working in the client’s home, and support siblings and the wider family as appropriate.
o Be imaginative and creative in finding new interests and activities for and with the client.
o Maintain knowledge of the care plans/working file and review this regularly, contributing to the working file when directed by the Care and Therapy Coordinator/Case Manager.
o Proactively support the Care and Therapy Coordinator in the successful fulfillment of their role.
3. General:
o In an emergency and in case of illness, be flexible and stand in for other staff members.
o Be open to and willing to obtain additional training and develop your skills.
o Comply with relevant legislation and care plans.
Person Specification
Essential Requirements:
1. Be willing not to smoke during your hours of duty.
2. Excellent references and enhanced DBS.
3. Partake in training sessions and use new information in your role as Support Worker.
4. Be physically fit to participate in the client’s therapeutic activities.
5. Be physically able to support moving and handling needs.
6. Ability to assist sensitively with intimate personal care.
7. Demonstrate a positive interest and attitude to working with a child with complex additional needs, enabling choice, independence, and confidence.
8. Awareness of safeguarding, and act as appropriate when necessary.
9. Use initiative to provide energetic, constructive, and creative play activities.
10. Commit to agreed hours, attending punctually and reliably.
11. Display a flexible and engaging approach.
12. Assist with household tasks and duties.
13. Work using own initiative and collaboratively as part of a team.
14. Be resourceful, self-motivated, and calm.
15. Effective verbal communication skills and good written skills to facilitate the documentation of accurate records.

Desirable:
1. Experience of working with children with challenging behavior and learning disabilities.
2. Experience of working with epilepsy.
3. Full manual driving license.
