The Opportunity:
We are looking for a Principal Structural Engineer to join the Technical Function at Laing O'Rourke, supporting initially across our Data Centres portfolio which currently has projects based in Slough, Dagenham and Salford. No experience of Data Centres necessary!
Laing O'Rourke also has a large portfolio of current and pipelined projects in the Healthcare, Science and Research, and Buildings within Defence and Infrastructure projects that offer scope for a varied career.
A Structures Technical Specialist has a strong technical design background, allowing them to provide targeted technical input into projects across all materials and building forms. This Structures Technical Specialist is able to provide due diligence reviews of information from consultants at key design stages and provide an analysis of level of completeness of design. They can also provide technical advice on the quality of consultants' advice and review interfaces and scope gaps. In particular, the technical specialists shall become acquainted with the most frequent interdisciplinary challenges faced on projects to supplement consultant discipline-specific knowledge.
The Structures Technical Specialist is a senior member of the Laing O'Rourke Design Job Family and Technical Function, which is there to ensure technical excellence, assurance and performance across all projects and opportunities from pre-project, early engagement and work winning through to detailed delivery. All of our designers are part of our Engineering Enterprise which aims to maximise and realise the potential of design to increase certainty on our projects.
What will the role look like?
* Providing front end design advice from a structural engineering perspective
* Supporting our project teams to direct design teams and produce the adequate information necessary for integrated design solutions that meet our clients and business needs (strategies and budgets).
* Developing knowledge of procurement, buildability and practical implications of our design solutions to supplement consultant team work.
* Reviewing design delivery to enhance quality of solutions and efficiency of design, procurement, manufacturing, assembly, commissioning and handover of total engineering excellent solutions for our clients.
* Retaining information for lessons learned, prepares technical guidance documents etc.
Technical Capabilities:
Supporting project teams to manage consultants
* At project outset, establish a meeting with the Structures Design Manager and Project Engineer to identify opportunities for targeted specialist input.
* Provide advice and review of performance expectations and briefs in complex environments to project teams.
* Able to articulate the contractual liabilities for project design and aid with scope discussions.
* Translate requirements between procurement, sub-contractors, sub-consultants and consultants to ensure optimum delivery for LOR projects.
* Challenges concept designs, maximising the use and implementation of DfMA, suggesting better value solutions for LOR and clients.
* Able to analyse the causes of design problems and develops mechanisms to minimise these.
Design review
* Review quality of design output from consultants for level of detail and opportunity for improvement at all stages of design
* Identifies design and construction risks and opportunities, contributes to risk / opportunity analysis, value engineering, whole life costing and risk mitigation techniques.
* Assists in management of risk and its close out.
* DfMA
* Liaise with CEMC Precast Technical Solutions leaders and Structures Design managers to provide additional support as required.
Design compliance
* Knows the causes of design interface problems and develops mechanisms to minimise these.
* Coordinates multi-disciplinary project designs.
* Implements procedures to ensure appropriate control is maintained on Professional Services Contract (PSC) compensation event process.
What skills & experience are we looking for?
* First degree in Civil / Structural Engineering Discipline. Other appropriate construction related qualification plus design related experience.
* Chartered Engineer with the IStructE or ICE
* Minimum 7 years' design consultancy experience. Different procurement routes, different sector experience. Experience end to end managing design - from concept to handover,
