Job Summary
Cardio-Respiratory are looking for a Deputy Head of Nursing who is an exceptional dedicated senior nurse with the drive and ambition to provide and maintain the highest standards of patient care. We are looking for an individual who can demonstrate experience in a senior clinical leadership role with evidence of enhancing the experience of both the patients and staff within a complex organisation.
Cardio-Respiratory services are situated across two sites at the Leeds General Infirmary and at St James hospital consisting of 10 wards, including a Respiratory Care Unit and Coronary Care Unit. The CSU is also home to the Trust's Cardiac Catheter Labs and is one of the busiest PCI centres in the United Kingdom, a work leading Cystic fibrosis unit, Sleep Services, Immunology and Allergy. The portfolio of the Deputy HoN role will focus upon specific patient pathway development and service improvements. You will be working collaboratively with the Triumvirate Team to provide leadership, strategic direction, financial control, and workforce development.
Main duties of the job
The Deputy Head of Nursing will work with and support the Head of Nursing and will be instrumental in delivering on all aspects of governance, risk, professional and operational leadership. In addition, patient safety is fundamental to the excellence of the services, and the post holder will be responsible for ensuring the consistent delivery of evidence-based, safe and effective nursing, infection prevention, and safeguarding standards.
The successful candidate will be a key member of the senior nursing team and will have key working relationships with Matrons, Governance team, staff engagement advisor and other senior nursing colleagues across the Trust. They will provide compassionate and visible leadership and be able to create a culture of excellence, driving forward service improvements whilst maintaining patient-centered care. We are looking for a dynamic and committed nurse, with the ability to communicate effectively across multi-professional boundaries and across organizations.

Job Purpose and Dimensions
Managerially and professionally accountable to the Head of Nursing, the Deputy Head of Nursing has responsibility for the leadership and management of nursing and midwifery across the Clinical Service Unit (CSU). This includes line management responsibilities within the CSU and the management of specific clinical services/areas.
They will work to support the Head of Nursing for all issues relating to nursing within the CSU and will be an integral part of the senior nurse structure within the CSU. They are responsible for decision-making where practice or service delivery issues arise within the CSU or cross-speciality or when cross-speciality leadership is required. The Deputy Head of Nursing will establish and foster an effective working relationship with the CSU Management team to lead improvements in nursing, service delivery and the achievement of organisational priorities within the CSU. The Deputy Head of Nursing will deputise for the Head of Nursing on an as-required basis.
The Deputy Head of Nursing has responsibility for the delivery of safe, clinically and cost-effective and compassionate nursing/midwifery care within the CSU and provides assurance evidence to the Head of Nursing, Nurse Director (Operations)/Deputy Chief Nurse and Chief Nurse/Chief Operating Officer regarding compliance against all appropriate professional, organisational and national compliance standards.
The Deputy Head of Nursing (Band 8b) will be responsible for the care and professional practice delivered within a large CSU. This would equate to a nursing workforce of between approximately 600 whole time equivalent staff.
The role of the Deputy Head of Nursing will include the requirement to engage with partners outside of the organisation e.g. to collaborate in city-wide and national improvement projects and developing relationships with service users.

* Bachelors degree in subject relevant to the role.
* Masters degree or evidence of practical application of expertise at this level
* Post-graduate qualification within a leadership programme/study or evidence of practical application of expertise at this level

* Significant experience as a senior nurse.
* Demonstrable evidence of specialist knowledge of the professional leadership and management of nurses

* Demonstrable experience managing clinical services and of leading improvements in clinical settings, patient care and experience across multiple specialities including budget management
* Knowledge and experience of human resources management, communicating complex and contentious information to individuals and large groups
