We are looking for an individual to fill this six month locum post within the Ophthalmology Department at St James's University Hospital.
This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Medical Retina team. This post is based at St James Hospital but may include working at other LTHT sites when required.
The successful applicant should possess accreditation in Ophthalmology by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) or equivalent. Senior level experience in Medical Retina will be required. If needed, provision for support to attain CESR qualification can be discussed and arranged.
Main duties of the job
Applicants should have established skills in Ophthalmology. Excellent communication and team working skills, and a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is desirable.

The Eye Department is based at St James University Hospital, Leeds. There are 29 consultants in the wider Ophthalmology Department. The team also trains Ophthalmic specialist trainees from the region. We have recently moved into a new outpatient department which has provided us with much more space.
Job description
Job responsibilities
1. To provide a wide range of Ophthalmology care and subspecialty care for medical retinal conditions.
2. To be active in leading and developing the medical retina service.
3. To help train and supervise non-medical staff working within the retina service.
4. To collaborate with other surgical and non-surgical members of the team to achieve the best outcome for the patient.
5. To attend general and subspecialty ophthalmology clinics within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
6. Assessment, treatment and management plans are appropriate, clearly documented and auditable.
7. All surgical interventions, observations, designated tests and treatments are documented and follow established guidelines.
8. Day Case care may be provided within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust facilities.
9. Documentation is appropriate, timely, accurate and legible.
10. Patient assessments and treatments meet expected best practice guidelines.
11. General practitioner and specialist referrals are accepted and prioritised based on the agreed service referral criteria.
12. Ensure provision of a high standard of care to patients in operating theatre, inpatients, day cases and outpatients for both acute and elective conditions.
13. Referrals to other specialists, departments and hospitals are timely and appropriate.
14. To undertake research and teaching.
15. Preparation of reports as required i.e. police, coroner, Trust, GMC.
16. Ensure provision of a high standard of professionalism is maintained when dealing with caregivers and patient families.
17. Participates in multi-disciplinary team meetings.
18. Involvement in health promotion activities as required.
19. Provides education to nurses and other allied health professionals as appropriate.
20. Liaises with general practitioners and other health care professionals as required.
21. Elective cases are prioritised as per the elective booking system process and within recognised National and local targets. All patients shall be treated in order of clinical need.
22. Elective surgical procedures are delivered at St James University Hospital or at other Trust facilities and in private facilities on behalf of Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust as clinically appropriate.
23. Theatre utilisation is efficient.
24. Acute cases are prioritised according to clinical need.
25. Agreed contract volumes are targeted, monitored and achieved in conjunction with the Directorate management team.

Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
Essential
* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills
Essential
* Previous Fellowship in Medical Retina.
* Competence in cataract surgery is desirable.

* Passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from an approved provider.

* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Medical Retina.
* Completed at least 4 years of a higher surgical training in ophthalmology.
* Completed at least 12 months of Medical Retina subspecialty training.
* Competent in retinal laser procedures.
* Competent in Intravitreal treatment procedures.
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
