Job overview
We are looking to appoint a Clinical Engineering Technician at our St Richards Hospital Site. The post holder will support the Clinical Engineering Team as part of a wider Trust-wide assurance for the safe management of patient-connected medical devices.
The successful candidate will be highly competent and dependable with excellent organisational skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. You will be fully technically conversant with the repair and management of a wide range of modern medical devices and have a proven background for interacting at all levels with engineering and clinical colleagues. Previous experience of medical equipment repair and service will be required, together with a Degree in Electronic Engineering or an equivalent level of knowledge and experience. There will be a requirement for occasional cross-site working.

Main duties of the job
1. The Clinical Engineering Department is primarily concerned with providing evaluation and selection, acceptance checks, repair, calibration, and maintenance to a wide range of medical devices and equipment across University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust. The aim is to ensure equipment operates effectively and safely with a minimum of downtime.
2. Clinical areas include all general wards, Intensive Care, Special Care Baby Unit, all Theatre modalities, Cardiology, Renal Unit, and Equipment Library.
3. The post holder will carry out servicing, repair, calibration, scheduled preventative maintenance, safety, and acceptance testing on a wide range of patient-connected medical equipment. The post holder is required to work to high standards of safety and accountability.
4. The post holder liaises with clinical and other technical staff to identify faults and repair equipment, including working in clinical areas and working with manufacturers, as appropriate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Provide technical services for preventative maintenance, servicing, calibration, inspection, and repair to a wide range of complex and patient-connected medical equipment, including life support and life-saving devices under all conditions of urgency.
2. Communicate with clinical users to gain a clear understanding of the nature of problems with equipment. Assess the seriousness and implications of the problem and respond appropriately to the urgency of the user request.
3. Undertake fault-finding. Apply suitable fault-finding techniques to diagnose problems, including those beyond the scope of manufacturer-supplied information. Report unusual fault conditions to manufacturers. Exercise judgement to determine the causes of faults in devices with multiple complex and inter-related systems (e.g., electronic, computer, and mechanical systems), which may be due to user error, equipment failure, or environmental issues (e.g., temperature, humidity, radio frequency).
4. Rectify equipment faults. Undertake repairs on complex electrical/electronic and mechanical devices to circuit component level if necessary.
5. The post holder will be required to manage all work that they are given or are required to plan. This will be carried out using the post holder’s own discretion, following existing departmental/NHS policies and procedures. The post holder will work individually or as part of a multi-disciplinary team, using a full range of facilities to gather information (For example: Medical Equipment database, external manufacturers, MHRA, NPSA) in order to work within and around competing service demands. It will be expected for the post holder to actively promote and influence any service improvements that may be necessary to the department or to help with other colleagues’ activities.
6. Check that equipment performs to manufacturer’s specification.
7. Carry out calibration, quality control, safety, and acceptance testing.
8. Carry out electrical and functional safety checks.
9. Organise and manage planned maintenance schedules as required.
10. Using technical and clinical experience, identify potentially hazardous symptoms and faults when in clinical areas or in talking to clinical staff.
11. Liaise with clinical and other technical staff to carry out planned preventative maintenance. Schedules adjusted in response to clinical needs as appropriate.
12. Advise on equipment specification, evaluation, and selection.
13. Monitor stocks of appropriate components and spares, reordering where necessary to keep an adequate stock.
Person specification
Qualifications -
* Degree in Electronic Engineering or equivalent + relevant medical engineering courses.
* Foundation Degree in Medical Technologies or equivalent.
Demonstrated experience
* Experience of electrical and electronic engineering. Proven knowledge of medical electronics, electro-mechanical systems, computing, and medical device support.
* Attendance on training courses for the maintenance and repair of a wide range of medical devices.
Skills
* Evidence of having undertaken own development to improve understanding of equalities issues.
