Main duties of the job
The Health Care Assistant will function as part of the multi-disciplinary team within the ward or department to provide a seamless service and high-quality care to patients under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. The HCA is expected to undertake care to meet the needs of the patients under the supervision of a qualified nurse, working within the Trust's policies and procedures and the philosophy of the ward, collaboratively as part of the ward team.
It is expected that the Health Care Assistant will continue to develop their own capabilities and knowledge of nursing tasks in line with the Trust's career pathway.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
* Clinical Responsibilities
* At all times maintain the dignity and respect of patients.
* Maintain excellent communication with patients, relatives, and members of the MDT regarding all aspects of care, demonstrating a variety of communication skills in accordance with the client group.
* Implement patient care plans as instructed by a Registered Nurse.
* Assist in the admission process by accurately recording patient's demographic details.
* Assist patients with personal and oral hygiene as instructed.
* Assist patients with eating and drinking.
* Monitor and accurately record dietary and fluid intake, appropriately reporting any abnormalities to the nurse in charge.
* Enable patients to access appropriate toilet facilities, collecting and disposing of body waste.
Job Responsibilities
* Test blood sugars, urine, and stool specimens and accurately record results.
* Remove male/female indwelling urethral catheters.
* Obtain specimens and process specimens to the laboratory.
* Provide pressure area care to patients.
* Provide care to patients who are dying.
* Inspect and accurately record the condition of patients' skin integrity, appropriately escalating concerns.
* Able to prepare equipment for aseptic procedures as instructed.
* Take and record temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and pain scores on instruction from the Registered Nurse, accurately recording the results and reporting significant findings.
* Under the supervision of a qualified nurse, support patients undergoing clinical procedures, ensuring their dignity, respect, comfort, and safety.
* Record ECGs as instructed by a Registered Nurse.
* Orientate new patients to the ward or department.
* Undertake equipment safety checks.
* Escort patients to theatre.
* Participate in the enhanced observation of patients.
* Remove peripheral cannulas from patients.
* Promote optimal conditions for patients to rest and sleep.
* Respond appropriately to emergency situations.
* Ensure that the clinical/care environment is clean, safe, and tidy.
* Contribute to the reduction of healthcare-acquired infection by ensuring a high standard of infection control practice in light of research, current best evidence, and legislation.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Numeracy and spoken English to an appropriate standard to fulfil the job role.
* Basic computer skills.
* An understanding of working in a healthcare setting.
Knowledge and Experience
* Experience of being in a demanding environment with changing priorities.
* Experience of working in a healthcare setting.
