Buckinghamshire Mind is seeking a Team Lead to supervise and support a small team of Mental Health Crisis Support Workers within our Safe Haven Service.
Safe Haven offers a welcoming, safe, friendly and non-stigmatising environment for people to access in times of a mental health crisis. The service offers an ‘out of hours’ facility as an alternative to A&E or secondary care mental health presentations for those without physical need.
The service has been developed to offer person-centred individually focused support to meet emotional need and to provide support to build resilience. Additionally, we work alongside service users to review situations that are contributing to crisis, create safety plans and raise service user awareness of support within the community and within multiagency partnerships.
As the Lead of this team, you’ll naturally have skills in working with mental health and you’ll also have the ability to inspire and motivate your team, and to run a high-quality service.
As this role is based in the community there may be some travel between the two site locations in Buckinghamshire, you’ll need access to a vehicle for use during work hours. Alternative transport arrangements will be considered.
Key Responsibilities
Safe Haven offers a welcoming, safe, friendly and non-stigmatising environment for people to access in times of out-of-hours crisis and as an alternative to A&E, or secondary mental health care. It offers a safe place for emotional support, resilience building and person-centered support. Its aim is to deliver the following key outcomes:
* To provide a warm and welcoming environment for those people facing out-of- hours mental health crisis.
* Treat service users with respect and provide personalised support focused on individual need.
* To prevent the escalation of a mental health crisis and thereby reduce A&E attendance and avoid hospital admissions.
* To provide service users with a calming alternative to emergency departments.
* To raise service user awareness of alternative mental health services appropriate to personal need and circumstances and encourage their use to improve longer term mental health and well-being and reduce social isolation.
* To increase the independence and self-management skills of those people accessing the service.
Responsibilities
A. Operational and Line Management
* Overall line management responsibility for the successful delivery and smooth running of Safe Haven in High Wycombe.
* Coach and support Safe Haven workers in their provision of high-quality advice and emotional support to individuals who are referred to the service.
* Supervise and offer guidance to the Safe Haven Workers around therapeutic and wellbeing focused interventions for those service users in emotional distress.
* Ensure that effective risk assessment and safety planning is carried out.
* Liaising with the Crisis Service Manager to manage more complex operational issues within the service.
* Lead and support practice development within the team and provide mentoring to team members as required.
* To act as a source of support, advice and expertise to staff on matters of Safeguarding and making appropriate referrals by liaising with the designated Buckinghamshire Mind Safeguarding lead.
* In line with Health & Safety regulations ensure all staff undertakes safe working practices and that all Health & Safety checks are carried out and reported on in a timely manner.
* Communicate effectively with other team members ensuring that relevant information is passed on appropriately.
B. Quality and Monitoring
* Ensure data and qualitative information is collected and collated, as required and directed by the Operations Manager.
* Ensure that the service is effectively informed by service user feedback.
* Keep up to date with best practice and contribute to the continuous improvement of the service.
* Monitor the quality of the service and ensure appropriate data is collected (in line with GDPR) to monitor outputs and outcomes.
* Carry out initial assessments and maintain accurate case records within the required data collection and reporting system.
* Provide emotional support to individuals referred to the Mental Health Safety Planning Service.
* Utilise the online Bucks Mind Guide to help people to develop self-management strategies and to make the best use of the local resources around them, signposting or making referrals as required.
* Ensure the wellbeing and safety of service users, reporting any concerns to your line manager.
* Ensure Safeguarding concerns are responded to appropriately in line with Buckinghamshire Mind’s Safeguarding Policies.
* Communicate effectively with team members ensuring that relevant information is passed on appropriately.
* Ensure that the referral pathway is made aware of recommendations so that they can be followed up, Including MHICS teams and/or GP.
* Update and progress by accessing electronic patient records.
C. Partnership Working
* Work collaboratively with Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust staff to support, develop and promote both the Safe Haven services.
* Establish excellent working relationships with out-of-hours services such as Emergency Services, Crisis Teams and GPs, around inward and outward referrals.
* Follow up with other agencies if additional support is required for the service user accessing the Safe Haven.
D. Supervision, Training, Meetings and Support
* Prepare for and attend regular individual and group supervisions.
* Be proactive in reviewing and evaluating personal performance and identifying areas for improvement and development; participate in annual personal review meetings.
* Attend training as appropriate and show a willingness to undertake professional development opportunities relevant to the role.
* Attend and participate in team meetings and other meetings as required.
E. Other
* Work within Buckinghamshire Mind’s and Berkshire Mind’s policies and procedures including Performance Management, Confidentiality, Safeguarding, Equal Opportunities, Service User Involvement, Health and Safety and the Professional Boundaries policy.
* Keep informed about other projects, events and related issues regarding Buckinghamshire and Berkshire Mind.
* Inform Buckinghamshire Mind colleagues if Mind Guide information needs revising or if any additional services are identified for inclusion.
* Keep line manager up to date and informed.
* Prepare for supervision and use it effectively.
* Work in a flexible way to take on other responsibilities as appropriate.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Essential
* Excellent team management skills and a high level of ability to support and supervise staff.
* Ability to respond calmly and effectively to high-risk situations which may include self-harm or suicide ideation.
* Proven experience of providing an adult mental health support service.
* Knowledge and experience of supporting people with mental health problems to increase their independence and to develop self-management strategies.
* Experience responding to emotional crisis, safety planning and suicide response/prevention.
* High level of ability to develop and deliver a high-quality service.
* High level of ability to develop positive and constructive relationships with external agencies.
* Ability to prioritise your own workload and manage time effectively.
* Background in mental health.
* Supports the aims and work of Buckinghamshire Mind.
* Maintains strict confidentiality concerning all Buckinghamshire matters.
* A positive attitude towards people with mental health problems, in particular people’s ability to develop and change. Strong commitment to equal opportunities and diversity.
Desirable
* Ability to support and coach staff to develop boundaried therapeutic relationships with vulnerable adults.
* Knowledge and understanding of the relevant statutory authorities including NHS and social care.
* Experience of providing training to groups and/or individuals.
* Experience of working with external stakeholders e.g. Care Teams, Commissioners/Funders, Community Groups.
* Understanding and knowledge of other mental health and related services, both voluntary and statutory.
IT, Communication and Interpersonal skills
Essential
* Good level of IT skills including Microsoft Office and Outlook.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills especially with people who experience/have experienced mental health issues.
* Able to network and build sustainable working partnerships with volunteers, staff and other agencies.
