Specialty Doctor in Adult Eating Disorder Service - Norfolk

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Specialty Doctor to join our Adult Community Eating Disorder Service. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a dynamic and supportive multidisciplinary team, providing essential medical and psychological care to individuals with complex eating disorders. You will contribute to both the physical health and psychological recovery of our patients, with responsibilities that include overseeing blood monitoring, medical reviews, and providing psychological interventions.
Main duties of the job
* Medical Oversight & Clinical Management: Provide comprehensive medical oversight and day-to-day management for patients with eating disorders, working closely with the multidisciplinary team to deliver integrated care.
* Medical Monitoring: Collaborate with GP colleagues and other health professionals to ensure thorough monitoring of physical health, including overseeing blood tests, physical observations, and addressing medical concerns.
* Psychological Interventions: Deliver individual and group psychological interventions (e.g., SSCM, MBT, CBT, CBT-E) to help patients recover from eating disorders, using evidence-based approaches tailored to individual needs.
* Patient Reviews & Medication Management: Conduct medication reviews, prescribe appropriate supplements, and manage high-risk patients requiring careful monitoring.
* Acute Pathway Participation: Assess and review patients on medical wards in collaboration with acute care teams, ensuring continuity of care during inpatient stays.
* Assessment Clinics & Treatment Planning: Participate in assessment clinics and treatment planning processes, performing one assessment per week once competent.
* Teaching & Training: Provide guidance and training to junior staff, medical students, and other healthcare professionals, supporting ongoing professional development across the team.
* Clinical Governance & Research: Engage in clinical audits, case discussions, and contribute to ongoing service improvements through research and quality initiatives.
* Professional Development: Participate in regular supervision, job planning, appraisals, and ensure continuous participation in CPD and mandatory training.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will:
* Work with a multi-disciplinary team
* Attend team meetings and routine handovers/catch up meetings
* Provide medical input and support to the community team and junior colleagues
* Provide psychological therapy to eating disorder patients (training and supervision will be provided for this)
* Contribute to multidisciplinary assessments, care planning, clinical reports and referral to other appropriate agencies/services.
* Provide feedback to patients and appropriate professionals regarding physical health and psychological formulations related to eating disorders and medical monitoring
* Provide health education advice for clients following the medical assessment/review
* Refer to appropriate agencies for further medical assessment/treatments, as necessary.
* Participate in the acute pathway (assessing/reviewing patients while they are on medical wards in NNUH/QEH hospitals).
* Participate in assessment clinics (and when ready to do one assessment per week)
* Conduct specific psychiatric reviews of patients
* Be involved in teaching and training within service and to other professionals
* Actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance, audit and research.
* Ensure active participation in continuing professional development (CPD) and attend all relevant mandatory training.
* Participate in face-to-face, regular weekly supervision, annual appraisal, and annual job planning.
Other responsibilities
If the post holder proves to be both successful and committed at Specialty Doctor Level there is the possibility of further career development and training in the specialty of eating disorders. All career grade doctors are required to maintain their education, professional development, and accreditation. Appropriate time and financial support is available for this purpose.

Person Specification
Education/Qualifications
* Full GMC registration and licence to practice
* MBBS or equivalent
* Eligible for approval under Section 12 of the MHA 1983
* MRCPsych or equivalent
Entry criteria for the grade
* Completed minimum of 4 years full-time postgraduate training (or equivalent) of which 2 will be in a specialty training programme in psychiatry or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty or
* Shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
Experience
* Experience of multi-disciplinary working
Skills/Ability/Knowledge
* Knowledge of policy and legislation relating to mental health
* Ability to make decisions and carry out responsibilities without direct supervision.
* Ability to take a clinical lead under the supervision of the Consultant
* Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the context of the service within the wider landscape of the current NHS.
* Candidates need to be effective teachers and trainers and be able to guide their own Continued Professional Development.
* Experience in eating disorder psychiatry
