Job Description
My client is a largely successful global company specializing in the telecommunications and power industries through the manufacturing of pre-connectorized, blown fibre cabling and ducted network solutions. They are looking to hire a Manufacturing Process Engineer on a permanent basis. The role will be based in Hawick and it is a hybrid position.
A Process Engineer will be responsible for driving continuous improvement across all extrusion processes, ensuring optimal production speed, high-quality output, and adherence to safety and environmental standards. By analysing current methods, understanding current materials, identifying opportunities for optimisation in process, equipment and materials, and collaborating with cross-functional teams, this role will actively contribute to cost reduction, efficiency gains and a culture of operational excellence – Ultimately supporting and underpinning the organisation's long-term sustainability and success.
Responsibilities
* Monitor and optimise extrusion parameters to ensure maximum throughput and minimal waste.
* Conduct regular audits of existing processes, identifying areas for improvement and implementing solutions.
* Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for extrusion processes, providing technical guidance and support to production teams.
* Coordinate with maintenance and engineering teams to diagnose and resolve equipment malfunctions, reducing downtime.
* Ensure all process-related documentation meets internal and external compliance standards (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 14001).
* Lead or participate in cross-functional teams to execute Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement initiatives.
* Track and analyse key performance indicators (KPIs) such as scrap rates and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
* Develop action plans to address root causes of non-conformance and drive process enhancements.
* Oversee installation and commissioning of new machinery, ensuring safety, quality, and on-time project completion.
* Act as a liaison between production, quality, and leadership teams, sharing best practices and process updates.
* Provide training and mentorship to operators on new procedures and equipment operation.
* Collect, interpret, and analyse process data to make informed recommendations for process optimization.
* Implement statistical process control (SPC) methods to maintain consistent product quality.
* Integrate HSE considerations into daily activities and improvement projects.
Experience Required
* Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, or similar).
* Additional certifications in Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma.
* Proven track record (3+ years) in a manufacturing environment, ideally in plastic or polymer extrusion.
* Evidentiary experience in process optimisation, equipment selection, and process troubleshooting.
* Familiarity with safety protocols, quality standards (ISO 9001), and environmental standards (ISO 14001).
* Knowledge of extrusion machinery and related technologies.
* Robust understanding of polymers and their varied processing behaviours, in particular Polyolefins.
* Proficient in data analysis, process simulation, and root-cause analysis techniques.
* Understanding of Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
* Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., advanced formulas, pivot tables, macros) for data analysis and reporting.
* Familiarity with ERP, MES, or other manufacturing-related software tools.
* Ability to lead cross-functional projects and initiatives.
* Willingness to work flexible hours or shifts to support production needs.
