Vacancy: Industrial Placement Student Location: Sonning Job Family: R&D Johnson Matthey is excited to open up our application process for sixteen 12-month industrial placements at our Corporate Technology Centre in Sonning Common, near Reading, starting in July 2025. The roles will suit undergraduates currently studying science and engineering degrees which have a 1-year industrial placement/internship option included in their courses. The placements will be based in one or more of the R&D groups that JM runs at our Technology Centre. These help to support our goals in developing sustainable technology to help the world achieve net zero. These include; Emission Control : Development of advanced emission control products for mobile and stationary polluting sources. The roles will encompass catalyst preparation, characterisation, reaction engineering and modelling. Refining and Separation Technology : Development of solid phase separation media including synthesis, modelling and life cycle analysis. Advanced Characterisation : Development of new analysis approaches to the wide range of products developed by JM. The roles will include techniques such as X-Ray Diffraction, Electron Microscopy and Gas Chromatography, together with advanced data analysis development. Process Catalysis and Catalysts : Development of catalysts and flow sheets for decarbonizing chemical processes. The roles will include catalyst synthesis, characterisation, and evaluation. Hydrogen Technology : A wide range of roles in electrolyser, membrane and fuel cell research. These will include synthesis of catalytic materials, coating formulation, ionomer, membrane and material characterisation, electrochemical methods and membrane durability understanding. Core Capabilities : A wide range of roles in supporting research including sustainable materials preparation, advanced coating formulations and electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide to chemicals. Your responsibilities: A range of laboratory-based activities. Maintaining excellent EHS standards and housekeeping at all times. Keeping an accurate track record of the work carried out by using electronic lab notes. Interacting with project leaders regularly to define the project needs and to understand their experimental objectives to be able to conduct independent work in the laboratory. Reviewing the technical literature to develop an understanding of the relevant technologies. Writing monthly reports and making presentations to communicate the results of their work to project team Communicating results to other stakeholders across JM Contributing ideas and suggestions for improvements to the project Requirements for the role: Currently studying a Science based degree (Chemistry/Material Science/Chemical Engineering/Physics/Data Science) Experience in data analysis tools (Desirable) How you will be rewarded: We offer a competitive compensation and benefits package including bonus, excellent pension contributions and 25 days annual leave (varies for shift-based roles).
