The Hydrogen Fuel System Functional Lead Engineer at Marshall plays a pivotal role in the innovation and development of liquid hydrogen fuel system solutions for next-generation zero emission aircraft. This position leads the design and development of key functional aspects of the liquid hydrogen fuel system, ensuring compliance with engineering processes, safety standards, and performance targets.
Your responsibilities in this role include:
* Implement and ensure compliance with Lifecycle Management and Engineering processes within Marshall hydrogen industrial research context.
* Support continuous improvement initiatives related to the hydrogen fuel system.
* Lead the design and development of critical functional aspects of the liquid hydrogen fuel system, including Refuel/Defuel, Venting, and Hazard Suppression.
* Ensure the design meets performance targets and safety requirements, and integration needs within an aircraft's overall systems.
* Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, researchers, technicians, and quality assurance professionals.
* Integrate functional subsystems within the overall fuel system architecture.
* Plan and oversee comprehensive testing and validation procedures for fuel system components/subsystems to ensure technology maturity (TRL3-6), reliability, and safety.
* Analyse test data, identify patterns, and collaborate with testing teams to address any issues or anomalies in the performance of fuel management and control technologies.
* Ensure that resulting system design, manufacturing, and maintenance processes adhere to relevant aerospace industry regulations and safety standards.
* Identify gaps in existing standards and collaborate with regulatory bodies and industry partners to develop new standards where necessary, ensuring compliance with evolving industry requirements.
* Collaborate with the project team and support functions to monitor project progress, track milestones, and address any deviations from the project plan.
* Proactively identify potential challenges and deviations, develop mitigation strategies, and ensure timely and successful project completion.
* Facilitate knowledge retention and dissemination strategies.
* Capture, organize, and preserve knowledge, insights, and best practices related to the hydrogen fuel system.
* Perform effective risk management activities to identify and mitigate potential risks, opportunities, or vulnerabilities in the fuel system's design or operation.
* Develop strategies to mitigate identified risks.
* Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency, performance, and reliability of the fuel system architecture.
* Roadmap the remaining Technology Readiness Levels (TRL6-TRL9) for the fuel system.
Apply if you have most of the following:
* In-depth knowledge of fuel system engineering principles, practises, methods, and processes.
* Strong project and risk management skills.
* Experience in digital design, with proficiency in relevant computer/software packages, to support low risk design development and validation. Including or equivalent to IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management tools DOORS NEXT, Workflow and Test management and Rhapsody, CATIA V5, MATLAB, Simulink and Simscape, Siemens Capital software.
* Experience in manufacturing of low TRL mock-ups and prototypes.
* Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
* Experience in aerospace engineering or related field, with a focus on fuel systems and technology development.
* Proven experience in leading multidisciplinary teams and coordinating complex projects.
* Experience in liquid hydrogen fuel system design, development, testing, and validation highly desired.
* Degree level or equivalent in a STEM or adjacent discipline.
