Starting salary up to £39,535 – 35 hours
Friends of the Earth is the UK’s leading environment charity with a number of high profile successes under our belt – including doorstep recycling and laws to protect our climate, wildlife and health.
We’re looking for an inspiring Communications and Media Manager with a nose for news and the leadership and creativity to deliver high impact media coverage and profile for Friends of the Earth’s leading campaigns and fundraising drives.
As the head of our Communications and Media Team, you will bring bags of initiative and first class strategy, influencing and project management skills.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Providing an effective and rapid response to high profile media issues
2. Creating and implementing communications and media strategies which raise the profile of our campaigns and help us to win them
3. Offering a first class service to journalists including swift access to information, comment, interviewees and organisational expertise
4. Writing articles, blogs, press releases, statements and internal and external briefings
5. Commissioning online content and managing our profile on social networking sites
6. Developing and managing relationships with celebrity supporters
7. Managing media and public relations issues
8. Briefing and training Friends of the Earth spokespeople
The role sits within our Fundraising, Communications and Activism directorate and reports to our Head of Communications. We are looking for someone with a strong grasp of the political, media and public context in which Friends of the Earth works, and the drive and ideas to create mainstream profile for our campaigns and fundraising drives.
You will need to have an appetite for working with a range of people from across Friends of the Earth to shape campaign strategy, media stories and communications tactics, and to build new alliances and contacts which help spread our messages.
Strong media relations or public relations experience within a national organisation is essential. You will be a strong project and people manager with a sound understanding of online communications, creative PR techniques and brand management.
You may occasionally be required to travel nationally and internationally, and to work outside core office hours.
You will also take part in the rota for our team’s 24-hour out-of-hours media service.
