Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Cancer Services team to provide administrative support within the Urgent Suspected Cancer referrals office based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
The successful applicant will be patient focused; have excellent communication and organisational skills; be familiar with all of the Trust’s computer systems including Somerset and have excellent IT skills including Excel. Previous experience of administrative and telecommunications work is essential to the role as well as a resilience to deal with the fast pace of the role and the emotional and sometimes distressing nature of cancer.
Main duties of the job
* To undertake booking and scheduling duties in the Urgent Suspected Cancer Referral office; all patients are contacted by telephone.
* The delivery of a patient cancellation/postponement service.
* Using Trust systems PAS, CAREFLOW, ERS and Somerset Cancer Register.
* Develop & maintain effective communication skills liaising with patients, GPs and internal/external contacts.
* Responsible for ensuring that the booked appointment is made within the designated time limit.
* Responsible for ensuring that new patient clinics are booked to their maximum capacity.
* Responsible for the checking and registering of new patient referrals and the distribution of letters for grading by individual consultants.
* To meet performance standards specific to the area they are working in.
* Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
* Work within well defined boundaries, using initiative to make planning decisions as required.
* To be responsible for assisting in the training of new staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful applicant will be joining the Urgent Suspected Cancer Referral team based at The Royal Shrewsbury Team. The team is a small, dynamic team of Urgent Appointment Co-ordinators and 1 Team Leader but also part of the larger cancer services team.
Person specification
Qualifications
* English GCSE (A-C) (9-4) or equivalent qualification or experience.
* NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent level of knowledge or experience.
* Maths GCSE (A-C) (9-4) or equivalent qualification or experience.
Previous Experience
* Administrative Experience.
* Experience of working with software programmes.
* Experience of dealing with patients/clients.
Skills and Knowledge
* Computer literate with IT skills e.g. Microsoft Office.
* Knowledge of booking processes across Primary and Secondary Care.
* Knowledge of NHS E-Referrals Services (E-RS).
* Understanding and knowledge of 'choice' in healthcare.
