North Middlesex Maternity: A career in Midwifery, not just a job.
We are looking for a midwife who has a passion for education and can offer the right support to our pre-registration students to achieve their goal to become qualified midwives. We want someone who has a focus on evidence-based training as well as pastoral support to ensure an excellent student experience as well as successful completion of training.
Main duties of the job
This role will require the postholder to demonstrate high levels of organisation and sound clinical knowledge. They would need to have a good understanding of midwifery training and other issues in maternity education. They will also need to have a strong focus on the health and wellbeing of our student population.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical Responsibilities
1. Provide expert advice on matters relating to midwifery practice and be conversant with and implement education and practice standards from NMC and HEI.
2. Demonstrate expert knowledge by being visible, accessible and using midwifery skills.
3. Work with the practice supervisors and assessors, practice development midwives, and senior team to ensure that there is a consistent approach to students' clinical experience and teaching in clinical areas.
4. Maintain and develop midwifery skills by keeping abreast with current research, best practice and support midwives and students by working with them in clinical areas.
5. Ensure that midwifery practice complies with Trust Policy, procedure and guidelines and reflects evidence based / best practice.
6. Facilitate student learning by running 1:1 and small group teaching sessions in clinical areas, encouraging and leading on reflective practice, teaching and assessing clinical skills in the HEI and examining students by being involved with OSCEs.
7. Work in partnership with the Education Team to provide and facilitate Mandatory training within Maternity Department.
8. To undertake one clinical day a week to maintain clinical credibility.
Professional and Leadership
1. Provide professional role modelling to lead and inspire the professional development of midwifery.
2. Provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in the clinical setting to provide assistance, advice and support in any matters relating to education.
3. Assisting in the updating of current guidelines and the development of new evidence based guidelines.
4. With the education lead, work collaboratively to ensure that women and babies receive appropriate evidence-based midwifery care.
5. Support and facilitate the development of midwifery research.
6. With the education lead, work collaboratively to ensure that robust systems are in place for the appropriate supervision and assessment of student midwives and that the learning environment is maintained.
7. Liaise with the HEIs to raise any concerns about student performance, health or wellbeing. Report any absences and utilise the correct referral pathway for any support required with academic, practice, health or social issues.
8. Provide guidance and support to student supervisors and assessors in their professional development and assist in identifying educational needs.
9. Lead on implementation of new models of assessment or curriculum changes.
10. Foster a culture of incident reporting, reflection, openness, and mutual respect between professions and professional development within midwifery.
11. Keep up to date with current developments in midwifery ensure evidence based practice, assisting with the implementation of the midwifery recommendations from NICE or other interventions such as Ockenden recommendations.
12. Communicate effectively at all times and maintain a harmonious working environment.
13. Attend professional meetings, HEI and operational meetings on a regular basis.
14. Engender a culture of respectful relationships.
15. Conduct oneself in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Trust policies.
16. Develop new skills and knowledge pertaining to midwifery as required.

Performance Management and Service Development
1. To participate in curriculum planning and co-ordination of the Midwifery training programmes, attending appropriate meetings within HEI and Trust, and being involved in the selection and recruitment process.
2. Work in partnership with the Trust and HEI co-ordinating student placement mapping. Create practice-based opportunities for learning match practice-based learning to coincide with theory taught in the classroom.
3. With the education lead, work collaboratively to ensure that students achieve the NMC requirements for clinical skills practice assessments, manipulate student learning experiences where necessary to meet this need, troubleshooting when issues arise.
4. Work collaboratively with the students, Practice Supervisors, Assessors and Academic Assessors, LME and any other required party to support students when concerns have been raised about performance, to create an achievable Action Plan to give them the best opportunity to succeed in practice.
5. Provide practice based continuing professional development for mentors including education and skills in teaching and assessing in clinical practice.
6. Support midwives and student midwives to provide responsive care packages to women and their families that are safe and effective.
7. Work with the education lead to co-ordinate and support midwives to gain experience supervising students and to become competent assessors.
8. Assist the midwifery education lead in ensuring that appropriate systems are in place to collect data for quality analysis on student hour or learning experience.
1. Work in collaboration with Practice Development Midwives in reviewing and maintaining Preceptorship programme for all newly qualified midwives/RTP Midwives.
2. With the education lead, work collaboratively to monitor and ensure education resources are used effectively.
3. Work closely with the HEIs to ensure that an optimum learning environment is created for students and trained staff. Participate in internal and external education reviews/audit standards.
4. Work in collaboration with midwifery management and practice teams to move services forward in line with the maternity strategy, external agencies and Government initiatives.
5. Assist with the identification of areas for service development, propose and implement the development of policies, procedures and guidelines to support change.
6. Work proactively with management staff to minimise risk and ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation.
1. Participate in investigations into complaints, clinical incidents and medication and blood transfusion incidents as they occur, assist in improvements to practice identified as a result of these investigations. Ensuring that lessons learnt are fed back into student/mentor forums and clinical practice.
Other Duties
1. Provide cover for colleagues as appropriate.
2. Assist in producing ad hoc reports and in project work.
3. Undertake any other duties requested as appropriate to the banding eg bleep holder.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential
1. Qualified midwife with active NMC registration.
2. First degree.
3. ENB 998 / Mentorship or teaching qualification.
4. Practice Assessor.
5. Neonatal life support instructor PROMPT/ALSO trainer.
Desirable
1. Masters level qualification or a postgraduate qualification.
2. Practice teacher or other teaching qualification or willingness to work towards.
