Job Introduction
The Technical Operator (TO) will be based in the BBC Inverness office and will work as part of a team of around ten Senior Technical Operators and Technical Operators. The team is supported by a Lead Technical Operator, who is also based in Inverness.
The TO will contribute to a range of tasks to help gather, prepare, and broadcast content on BBC ALBA and Radio nan Gàidheal, working in close partnership with editorial colleagues to deliver trusted, high-quality programming for our audiences.
The role combines a mix of studio-based work — including supporting live TV and radio output — and field-based content gathering for a range of platforms. A commitment to technical quality is important, and there will be ongoing opportunities to build and strengthen your skills to support the needs of our services.
The TO will collaborate with editorial colleagues to support the BBC’s focus on digital growth, and will be part of the wider Nations Operations team working across Scotland.
Main Responsibilities
1. Plan and prepare the technical facilities needed for broadcasts in radio studios, the TV gallery, studio floor, and on location where required.
2. Operate broadcast camera equipment to gather content for a variety of platforms and formats.
3. Collaborate with colleagues to assemble all material needed for each programme.
4. Support live broadcasts by resolving any technical issues, considering editorial needs and available resources.
5. Recommend equipment and setups best suited to the editorial style sought.
6. Work closely with editorial teams to offer technical input on story treatments, ensuring high production quality and technical viability.
Are you the right candidate?
1. Experience of working as a technical operator in a live broadcast environment and a range of production genres.
2. Familiarity with video editing and asset management systems such as Avid Media Composer, MediaCentral and Interplay.
3. Familiarity with baseband and file-based routing and ingest systems such as FastServe and Airspeed.
4. Good technical knowledge of broadcast systems and infrastructure for studio and outside broadcast (OB) facilities.
5. A working knowledge of television lighting, with an appreciation for how light and colour is used to meet artistic and editorial requirements.
6. Enjoy working as part of a team and supporting others to achieve shared goals, as well as collaborating effectively with other teams.
7. Are open to learning new systems, tools, and ways of working.
8. Take pride in delivering reliable, high-quality work.
