The Helena Specialist Nursing Team & Ryegate House respite centre provides respite, continuing care and palliative care provision in a variety of settings that includes the child own home, school or Ryegate House residential setting.
The service aim is to provide excellent clinical care and support to children suffering from complex health needs, and their families, giving opportunities for learning, and living within the community, away from the inpatient setting.
You will be a compassionate, accountable individual who treats all colleagues, patients and service users with respect and seeks to deliver excellence in their role. Youwill share the Trust values and be committed to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Main duties of the job
You will care for patients with a range of different health needs, which include long term ventilation, tracheostomy care, seizure management and specialist feeding via NG or gastrostomy. The team also support paediatric palliation, within the community, and the successful candidate will be involved in working alongside our Palliative care team.
You will also be responsible for the updating of continuing care assessments, care plans, risk assessments, and providing education and support to both parents and carers, with management & supervision from senior nursing staff. Your role will also include some management input with our Band 3 & 4 care staff, that include Assistant Practitioners & Nursing Associates.
This post is an ideal opportunity to expand into the community setting, whilst maintaining strong links to the multidisciplinary team within the main hospital trust.

Communication and Relationship skills.
4. To maintain confidentiality of information regarding children/ families at all times.
5. To act as a positive role model and resource person to others including patients and relatives.
6. To communicate and liaise effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team, both verbally and in writing, providing and receiving complex or sensitive information
7. Persuade patients and families to co-operate with treatment for their well-being, effectively deal with anxious relatives.
8. Ensure parents/carers and the child (when appropriate), have the opportunity to agree and/or negotiate care.
9. Communicate with senior nursing staff regarding any problems, untoward occurrences or accidents
Knowledge, Training and Experience.
10. To have RSCN or RN (Child) registration, and use this knowledge in the daily care of patients.
11. To undertake administration of prescribed medication within the Trust policy for administration of medicines.
12. To be aware of the resources available for continuing education and demonstrate a positive attitude towards self development.
13. Develop knowledge skills and attitudes by undertaking competency packages as required by Trust and speciality during the first 2 years of post registration employment and on-going according to personal development plan.
14. Knowledge of principles of Infection Prevention & Control. It is essential that the post-holder adheres to all Trust infection control policies, procedures and protocols (to include hand decontamination, correct use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and care and management of patients with communicable infections. (ED specific safe and effective management of Chemical Biological, Radiation & Nuclear Casualties)
15. To work within Trust Child Safeguarding Policies and undertake safeguarding training at Level 3.
16. To ensure that personal mandatory and statutory training requirements are met in accordance with Sheffield Childrens NHS Foundation Trust policies, maintaining own professional profile.
17. Maintain competence in the use of all medical devices used within the department.
Analytical and Judgement Skills
18. To plan straightforward tasks on an ongoing daily basis.
19. To be able, with support from senior staff, to analyse and make decisions in relation to risk and patient care.
20. Utilise clinical and risk assessment skills to maintain a safe environment.
21. To review current practice and report to ward/department manager areas requiring change.
Planning and Organisational.
22. Provide clinical expertise to a defined group of patients/clients, participating in all aspects of care from initial contact/admission through to discharge, including transferring from one environment to another, or within the out-patient environment.
23. To incorporate planned patient investigations, treatments and discharges into the care for a patient allocation over the duration of a shift.
24. Participate as a mentor/preceptor, in the teaching/training, assessment and supervision process for learner nurses and support workers.
25. Be aware of local and national initiatives which impact on the development and delivery of the paediatric service.
