Design Manager – Landscaping Components & Street Furniture
Salary £40,000 - £45,000
Swanley Office
Permanent
The continuing success of this progressive Commercial Landscaping Company means that they need to appoint a Design Manager to take responsibility for coordinating the Hard Landscaping and construction elements of their Project Designs with both the capabilities of their materials suppliers and the expectations of the Client.
The Job:
The company tender for large commercial landscaping projects valued at between £¼ m and £3m. Their tenders are based on design drawings created by the Clients Landscape Architects. The architects’ drawings will include many innovative and bespoke features including stone and steel work, street furniture and specialist finishes. Each of these elements has to be reviewed in conjunction with the companies’ suppliers to make sure that they are available, or can be created at a reasonable cost and without significant delay. Any potential risks, problems or issues have to be resolved with the Client and their Architect in conjunction with the Supplier of the product.
The Design Manager will also review the overall project with a view to “value engineer” the design and make cost savings either in the cost of the product or in its construction and installation.
Examples of this process might be the design of a planter and seating area so that it’s weight and dimensions enable it to be lifted easily up to a roof garden. Or the substitution of Granite from China with a similar product from Spain thereby reducing delivery time and potential delays.
In the pre-award phase of the project the Design Manager works closely with the Project Consultant who manages the client’s account. In the post award phase, he works with the Project Manager, Site Manager and Quantity Surveyor.
Throughout the process the project drawings and specifications are revised or recreated and the control of all of the project documents is of importance.
