Role Overview: The Project Design Manager is a key role in ensuring the successful delivery of design-related aspects of construction projects. Reporting directly to the Project Manager, the Design Manager will coordinate and oversee the design process from concept through to completion, ensuring designs meet project requirements, client expectations, and industry standards. This role requires excellent communication, technical, and organisational skills to manage design teams, collaborate with stakeholders, and ensure seamless integration of design into project delivery.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Design Coordination and Management:
o Oversee the design process for assigned projects, ensuring all design outputs align with project specifications and requirements.
o Manage and coordinate design consultants, architects, and engineers to deliver high-quality designs on schedule.
o Ensure effective communication and collaboration between design teams, clients, and project stakeholders.
o Monitor progress and resolve design issues to prevent delays or conflicts during project execution.
2. Compliance and Quality Assurance:
o Ensure all designs comply with relevant regulations, standards, and codes of practice.
o Conduct design reviews and audits to maintain quality and accuracy throughout the project lifecycle.
o Identify and mitigate risks associated with design elements, ensuring safety and sustainability are prioritised.
3. Value Engineering and Innovation:
o Identify opportunities for value engineering to optimise project efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability.
o Drive innovative solutions and best practices in design to enhance project outcomes.
o Collaborate with the project team to ensure designs balance functionality, aesthetics, and practicality.
4. Support for Project Delivery:
o Work closely with the Project Manager to integrate design seamlessly into project delivery.
o Coordinate design handovers and ensure smooth transitions between design and construction phases.
o Address design-related challenges during construction, providing solutions that minimise impact on schedules and budgets.
5. Risk Management and Problem-Solving:
o Identify and assess risks to project delivery, including technical risks, implement mitigation measures and maintain accurate records.
o Develop and implement mitigation strategies to address risks and challenges.
o Resolve issues that arise during the project lifecycle, escalating to the Project Manager as needed.
6. Quality Assurance:
o Ensure all works are delivered to the required quality standards and in accordance with project specifications.
o Conduct regular inspections and audits to verify compliance with quality requirements.
o Address non-conformance issues promptly and effectively.
Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
* Professional accreditation (e.g., RIBA, ICE, CIOB, IET) is highly desirable.
* Proven experience in design management within the construction or rail industries.
* Track record of delivering design elements for complex, large-scale projects.
* Experience working with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, engineers, and subcontractors.

* Strong understanding of design processes, regulations, and standards.
* Excellent organisational and project management skills.
* Proficiency in design software and tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit) and project management software.
* Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
