Senior Clinical Fellow (SpR level) in Trauma
We are advertising to fill posts that will fall vacant from August 2025, August 2026 and February 2027 and would hope to appoint for slots going forward 12 - 18 months depending on the applications received.
The posts are based at Southmead Hospital. The appointment is based within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at North Bristol NHS Trust. Southmead Hospital is a Major Trauma Centre, covering a wide area of the south-west of England.
The Trust is a regional centre of Neurosurgery and Plastic surgery. A tertiary referral service is provided for pelvic and acetabular injuries, and for complex spinal injuries.
The department works in conjunction with the Geriatric Trauma consultants to provide care to elderly patients.
Main duties of the job
Orthopaedic trauma services are provided on Level 2 of the Brunel Building at Southmead Hospital. A minimum of 2 trauma lists run Monday to Friday, with one running for a third session. Specialist lists occur almost daily, including orthoplastic a minimum of 3 times per week, and pelvic list once a week. A single trauma list runs on the weekends.
New patient fracture clinics occur 7 days per week, with follow-up clinics 4 days per week. Specialist clinics include orthoplastic, complex trauma and pelvic clinics occur in addition to these.
Trauma services are provided by a team of consultants for each day of the week. Two consultants are present at weekends.

Job description Job responsibilities
Clinical
The trauma fellows are expected to be available for duties throughout the week, including trauma lists and clinics. Occasional daytime on call duties may be required. Nights form part of the on call duties and are at weekends only. The trauma fellows are expected to work flexibility together to maximise exposure to specific areas of interest. Fellows will be expected to lead in theatre and clinic, and gain skills in advanced trauma decision-making and management.
Teaching
Teaching to the fellows will be given by consultants. The post holder will be available to undertake sessions for medical students and junior doctors as required. In certain circumstances you may be required to cover a colleagues clinical duties in order that they may deliver teaching sessions.
Courses/Training/Journal Clubs/Governance/Lunchtime meetings
The post holder will be expected to attend educational meetings within the Department. Support will be given for quality improvement/audit/research as fits with the interests of the fellow.

Qualifications & Registrations
Essential
* FRCS (ORTH) or equivalent
* Maintain full registration with the GMC
Desirable
* Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS)
Training & Experience
Essential
* Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
* Minimum of 5 years postgraduate experience. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential.
Desirable
* Previous training in Trauma Surgery
* Training in diagnosis and treatment of Orthopaedic Trauma and Orthopaedic conditions.
Personal Requirements

* Good written communication skills
* Evidence of ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels
