Current Opening: Assistant Assessor
The Town of Shrewsbury seeks a detail-oriented, community-focused Assistant Assessor to join our dedicated Assessor’s Office team. This role involves a mix of office work, public interaction, and field inspections to support fair property assessment across the Town.
You will play a key role in inspecting, valuing, and assessing residential and commercial properties, supervising property inspection staff, assisting with tax billing, and interpreting Massachusetts assessment laws. You will also manage databases, coordinate with town departments, and maintain accurate property records.
Key Responsibilities:
* Supervise residential inspection programs and support field data collection
* Inspect and classify properties for taxation purposes
* Determine market values using appraisal techniques and research
* Process tax abatements and assist with quarterly billing
* Maintain subdivision records, permits, and GIS data
* Communicate assessments, abatements, and exemptions to the public
Qualifications:
* Associate’s Degree required
* 3–5 years of experience in assessment, real estate, or related field
* Strong knowledge of Massachusetts property tax laws
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and assessment tools
* Preferred experience with Vision CAMA, MUNIS, and DOR Gateway systems
* Excellent attention to detail, organizational, and customer service skills
Working Conditions:
* Hybrid of office and field work
* Ability to inspect properties in various terrains and weather conditions
* Regular lifting up to 10 pounds
