The QMC Neurosurgery department is one of the busiest neurosurgical departments in the country. We provide both adult and paediatric services to a wide regional area of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire with catchment population of around three and half million. Our highly specialised unit undertakes around 2500 neurosurgical emergency, urgent and elective operations annually around 250 -300 of these in children. We are a part of the East Midlands Trauma Service and a major trauma unit. We run four modern, fully equipped theatres and have access to additional emergency theatres as required every day. The department has the latest neuro navigation systems, stereotactic frames, intraoperative ultrasound, 5-ALA and ICG-enabled microscopes and endoscopes. We have intraoperative MRI and an integrated neurosurgical operative suite. We have recently acquired a neurosurgical robot. Nottingham University Hospitals brain tumour centre is one of only two Trusts in the country to be recognised as a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence for both Adult and Paediatric tumour treatment. We are currently the only centre in the Midland providing age-comprehensive Functional neurosurgery and Neuromodulation service. Our fellowship programme is well sought-after and we currently run RCS fellowships in Functional Neurosurgery and Neuro-oncology.
