Job Title: Senior Product Engineer - Composite Specialist
Department: Manufacturing Operations
Reports To: Head of Current Product and Manufacturing Engineering
Purpose of Post
The Senior Product Engineer will be pivotal in helping the business increase its capability and understanding of composite technologies, delivering engineering solutions and embedding robust production processes to meet the current and future challenges of the business. You must have a good knowledge of composite manufacturing processes and be able to apply the best industry practices to create lightweight, durable, and efficient composite components and assemblies.
Key Tasks
1. New Product Introduction (NPI):
Develop strong and productive relationships with key stakeholders across the business, ensuring collaboration and engagement with all departments. Support Engineering through Research and Development into new production methods and new materials (such as modifications to composition of Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) and/or gel coat paint systems). Co-ordination of new GRP design concepts through to full production. Ensure the composite facility has adequate tooling to support NPI, inclusive of GRP moulds, transport frames, trim templates, router, and assembly tooling. Produce build drawings, workshop procedures, and record modifications/improvements during development builds where appropriate. Maintain high standards of personal accountability.
2. Manufacturing Capabilities:
Ensure all manufacturing processes are safe and capable of achieving the required quality standards. Responsible GRP design for manufacture, including evaluation of mould designs to reduce waste and improve efficiency. Specification of processes, methods, equipment, and tooling to improve manufacturing safety, quality, velocity, and cost within the Composites production facility. Creation of concise standard work instructions for composite components and assemblies to support a Right First Time philosophy. Identification and specification of tooling requirements (for moulding and assembly processes) and the ability to accept/approve tooling for production use. Ensure product process maps are in the most optimum and up to date condition. Assist with labour and material allocation via estimates or time study activities. Interpretation of engineering drawings ensuring Composites Material Bills of Material (MBOM’s) are updated with appropriate routings for materials. Generate and analyse production data and performance metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of production processes and make data driven decisions.
3. Manage Change and Improvement:
Play an active role in the delivery of continuous improvement by identifying ways to reduce costs and improve standards ensuring stakeholder engagement throughout. Responsible for exposing waste within the manufacturing process and developing plans to reduce/eliminate it to improve cost competitiveness of business. Improve manufacturing processes in line with a zero defects philosophy. Assist production management with optimisation of facility layout for efficiency/effectiveness. Assess the performance of current manufacturing processes, using appropriate structured techniques to drive improved performance. Use a data-based approach and techniques such as, 8D and 5 Whys to problem solve within the manufacturing environment.
4. Training and Development:
Identify areas for process/operator development and implement the appropriate training to address skills gaps. Coach, mentor, and train teams capable of performing the manufacturing processes to the required standards in terms of Safety, Quality, Velocity and Cost. Assist with direct manpower planning through robust process routings and timed activities. Support production management to develop an employee orientated culture that emphasises quality, continuous improvement, and high performance.
5. General:
