Job overview
NHS England Southeast Region seeks to appoint an Associate Medical Director to support the work of the region’s Higher Level Responsible Officer. This role is part time (0.4 WTE) and will suit a licensed doctor with significant experience of the Responsible Officer role in either a secondary care or independent sector provider.
The HLRO team in NHS England Southeast Region Medical Directorate works within a statutory framework to support healthcare organisations to ensure doctors are working within robust clinical governance structures.
This role will work as part of a small team on behalf of the NHSE SE HLRO to support the Responsible Officers and medical appraisal leads of over 120 healthcare organisations to deliver appraisal and revalidation of their doctors.
Office based in either Reading, Southampton or Horley, with hybrid working, the post holder will be expected to spend on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person. Travel throughout the Southeast region and to London is required.
Main duties of the job
* Provide expert advice to the SE HLRO on matters relating to the role and responsibilities of the HLRO as set out in the Medical Profession Responsible Officer Regulations.
* Provide leadership, support and advice to the appraisers engaged by the HLRO team.
* Ensure a robust quality assurance process is implemented for medical appraisals delivered by the HLRO team’s pool of appraisers.
* Work with SE connected designated bodies to promote and facilitate the implementation of national appraisal policies and guidance.
* Foster enhanced relationships with designated bodies and their appointed ROs to bring cases for calibration.
* Undertake quality assurance visits with the HLRO team on behalf of the SE HLRO.
* Deputise for the SE HLRO as required.

Qualifications
* GMC registered and licensed medical practitioner
Knowledge and experience
* Significant experience of being a Responsible Officer for a secondary care or independent sector provider.
* Expert knowledge of the Medical Professions Responsible Officer Regulations from a senior leadership role.
* Senior level experience of managing individual medical practitioner performance.
Skills and capabilities
* The capacity to think strategically and to analyse and solve complex problems.
* Ability to prepare written reports on complex issues.
