WHERE: Midland Mencap Head Office with travel to locations across the Midlands

What does a Volunteer Manager do?
The Volunteer Manager will work alongside our management team and other colleagues to develop and deliver our Volunteer Strategy. This role has overall responsibility for the recruitment, retention and development of volunteers with a view to building a strong volunteer community, bringing added value to our services and increasing Midland Mencap’s visibility and participation from local communities across the Midlands region.
Key Responsibilities:
1. To lead on the delivery of Midland Mencap’s Volunteer Strategy ensuring that volunteering is developed in line with overall organisational objectives.
2. To work closely with managers and co-ordinators to understand how volunteering and community engagement could help meet service objectives.
3. To develop volunteer roles based on the needs of the organisation.
4. Engaging with local communities to increase Midland Mencap’s visibility to citizens and add value to our services.
5. To work with PR & Marketing colleagues to successfully promote volunteering, events and opportunities.
6. To keep up to date with key trends, national policy changes and movements in the world of volunteering.
7. To take responsibility for training and development programmes for volunteers and student placements, and to ensure that these are in line with best practice.
8. To maintain appropriate administrative and recording systems.
9. Provide written and oral reports and presentations as required.
10. To record volunteer and student placement activity within the organisation, ensuring that appropriate monitoring and evaluation is in place and reporting procedures are aligned to team and organisational objectives.
11. To attend organisational meetings as required.
12. To develop and implement volunteer retention and recognition strategies.
13. To provide support and guidance to volunteers and student placements.
14. To manage communication to volunteers and student placements and to provide relevant content for the website and social media channels.
15. To keep up to date with legislation and policy related to volunteering and inform relevant stakeholders of any necessary modifications.
16. Ensure accurate recording and confidentiality of volunteer data.
17. Ensure all relevant data is maintained and up to date using internal programs.
18. Complete relevant monitoring forms and systems required by funders.
19. Provide as required reports for referring agencies.
20. Liaise with other professionals/agencies and develop relevant knowledge and skills appropriate to the post.
21. To assume responsibility for own professional conduct and promote Midland Mencap’s vision, mission and values.
22. Keep abreast of current/relevant issues and legislation and ensure that all relevant individuals are informed of the likely impact of such issues.
23. Undertake any other relevant duties as identified by your line manager.
Person Specification
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
* At least two years’ experience of working with and managing volunteers in the third sector.
* Demonstrable understanding of the role and impact volunteers can have in delivering outcomes.
* Ability to recruit, support and develop volunteers.
* Excellent written, oral, presentation and ICT skills.
* Able to demonstrate understanding of working with diverse and underserved communities.
* Must have excellent organisational skills and be able to:
o Plan, prioritise and allocate work.
o Facilitate discussion at meetings.
o Deliver presentations & workshops.
* Demonstrate capacity to deal with a range of people including citizens and professionals.
* Ability to work with discretion, integrity and with complete confidentiality.
* Ability to work in dynamic and changing circumstances.
* Ability to build positive working relationships with stakeholders.
* Ability to delegate effectively and work independently as well as in a team.
* Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the issues faced by people with a learning disability and their families and carers.
* Ability to work with minimum supervision using initiative, multi-tasking, thinking on your feet and responding to urgent situations.
* Ability to identify problems, analyse the relevant factors and through the use of appropriate information, suggest effective solutions.
* Ability to accept responsibility for meeting service users needs, demonstrating flexibility and pride in delivering work of the highest quality, working to deadlines and under pressure.
