We have a vacancy for an experienced qualified Clinical Coder to join our expanding clinical coding team. We are passionate about supporting staff with personal development and would have a training plan that aligns to individual needs.
We are looking for someone who is forward-thinking, has experience in coding multiple specialties, is willing to lead and develop trainee staff, and support a work programme of clinical engagement. You must be able to demonstrate expert knowledge in the National Clinical Coding Rules and conventions, along with a good understanding of medical terminology and anatomy.
Main duties of the job
* Abstract complex clinical information from the patient's health record on discharge and translate the medical terminology into alpha-numerical codes using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD 10) for diagnoses, and the OPCS Classification of interventions and procedures in compliance with national clinical coding standards and guidelines.
* Participate in the training and mentorship of less experienced coders and assist with problem resolution.
* Day to day mentoring, allocating work to trainees, and sharing expert knowledge to achieve maximum coding assurance.
* Participate in the delivery of clinical coding awareness and engagement sessions, including recruitment evenings.
* Liaise with other departments including clinicians, medical secretaries, nursing staff, medical records team, and ward clerks to promote confidence and awareness in clinical coded data.
Job responsibilities
1. Attend and contribute to specialty coding meetings to help resolve issues encountered and improve the quality of coded data.
2. Act as a lead to designated coders to discuss coding issues and provide advice on clinical documentation.
3. Undertake routine and complex clinical coding using judgment to translate complex cases while achieving high levels of accuracy.
4. Problem solve and action the review of coding process problems to continually improve coding quality and timeliness.
5. Ensure all queries raised by other Trust staff are resolved promptly and effectively, or where appropriate referred to the Clinical Coding Team Leaders.
6. Accompany where necessary the Coding Auditor to discuss coding issues relevant to areas of expertise.
7. Work as part of a team, as well as independently, managing own workload and taking directives from managers and team leaders as required.
8. Mentor trainee clinical coders and support less experienced coders through their training and development plan.
9. May be required to deputize for the Team Leaders in training sessions of inexperienced coders.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* National Accredited Clinical Coder Qualification (ACC)
* Certification of attendance of Coding refresher Course within the last 3 years
* Certification of attendance of Medical Terminology & Anatomy Course
* 5 GCSEs A - C including English, Maths, Science or equivalent
* Degree in Health Informatics or related subject
Knowledge
* Expert Knowledge in Anatomy and Physiology
* Expert knowledge in national clinical coding standards and conventions and their relationships to the Healthcare Resource Group (HRG)
* Expert knowledge of medical terminology covering all acute specialties
* Knowledge of Payment by results Knowledge of SNOMED CT
Skills
* Excellent analytical skills and ability to use own judgment to interpret and summarize relevant clinical terminology used for diagnostic and procedural information.
* Ability to work with prolonged concentration. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
* Experience of working on own initiative and effectively within a team.
* Effective inter-personal skills and persuasive skills to liaise with Clinical and Administration staff on issues of clinical coding and complex medical information.
* Proven keyboard skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel.
* Ability to work under pressure with a high degree of accuracy, within strict deadlines.
* Ability to receive feedback and act on feedback in order to improve performance and knowledge.
* Ability to work flexibly to meet the changing needs of the services.
* Ability to work with a calm approach to agreed timescales and standards.
Experience
* Extensive knowledge/background of coding in an acute hospital
* In-depth knowledge and experience of using an encoder, specifically PCS and Simple code
* Experience of training and mentorship of other staff in complexities of coding.
* Coding experience in a minimum of 6 specialties.
* Staff and organizational development skills.
* Appreciation of and compliance with the Data Protection Act and Caldicott.
