Role Definition
Job Title: Fire Engineer
Reporting to: CDM Manager on a day to day basis and ultimately to the Senior Partner
Responsibilities
1. Advise the design team on appropriate fire strategies.
2. Prepare, develop and edit circulations, drawings, CFD models and other documents as appropriate, relating to the design of smoke ventilation, sprinkler systems, fire detection and fire alarm systems by the mechanical engineers.
3. Advise on appropriate fire engineering solutions to both simple and complex projects nationally and internationally.
4. Analyse project designs and their fire performance requirements, including advising on applicable legislation and codes.
5. Develop guidance materials on good practice principles and strategic hierarchy of passive and active systems available.
6. Develop representations of design option solutions for further discussion with the design team/integrated design team or external consultants.
7. Evaluate/review/comment on suitability of available computer programs within F+P to carry out fire and structural fire engineering analysis.
8. Present the fire strategy to clients, negotiate with relevant enforcing authorities and consultants when required.
9. Ability to travel when required to attend meetings; in some cases international travel may be necessary, however the frequency is likely to be minimal, this could change dependent upon the project.
10. Assess the health and safety implications of advice given, compliance with CDM regulations.
11. Complete fire design risk assessments and safety evaluations where applicable.
12. Maintain and provide records of advice given.
13. Thorough knowledge of and compliance with Foster and Partners procedures and standards.
Qualities and Skills required
1. Able to demonstrate the ability to undertake the above responsibilities.
2. Legally able to work in the country in which the position is based.
3. Able to manage sensitive and sometimes confidential information.
4. Self-motivated and able to take responsibility.
5. Able to demonstrate initiative and a proactive approach to daily tasks.
6. Able to work as part of an effective team assisting and supporting team members.
7. Ability to use a variety of media in the development and documentation of a design project, for example, InDesign, Photoshop and video clips.
8. Educated to degree level BEng, BSc or equivalent in Fire engineering.
9. Evidence of good design understanding.
10. Evidence of the ability to understand design decisions taken by others.
11. Ability to use some of the following: Micro Station, InDesign, and Structural Software Packages.
