Accountable to: Cellular Pathology Divisional Manager and Clinical Lead
Hours of work: 37.5
The job holder will be required to work out of hours including unsocial and contractual overtime (specific rota details are held locally within departments).

Main duties of the job
AIM OF THE ROLE:
To be an efficient and flexible member of the Cellular Pathology team providing a consistently high quality and professional service to North West London Pathology and all users of the service.
Key result areas:
1. Provide and co-ordinate specialist clinical technical services to patients that may include research and audit samples.
2. Undertake the day-to-day management of the dissection area and specimen reception sections within the laboratory.
3. Develop and improve professional expertise and specialist skills.
4. Provide necessary training and supervision to staff within the section and visiting staff as required (medical, scientific and other staff).
5. Co-ordinate specialist clinical technical and scientific services to patients that may include research and audit.
6. Develop the service implementing new ideas to ensure that the roles change according to the changing clinical and research needs under the guidance of medical staff and the management team.
7. Participate in the training programmes required for the advanced dissection role.

Job Plan:
As a guide, the working time for the advanced dissection post holders will be apportioned as follows:
80% dissection, encompassing A-E grade specimens (as appropriate and only where training and competency has been completed or consultant supervision is in place).
20% routine advanced BMS duties including acting as the designated person responsible for managing and co-ordinating activities within the cut-up or routine section of the histopathology laboratory. This role may be shared by other Advanced BMS posts.
Clinical audit will be required to be completed periodically as a demonstration of ongoing clinical effectiveness.
MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Communication and Relationship Skills:

2. Scientific and Technical Duties:
1. Ensure that documentation is maintained to the Trust standard (including electronic records).
2. Demonstrate awareness and compliance with Trust policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards.
3. Identify and report clinical and non-clinical risks so that appropriate action can be taken in accordance with the Trust risk management policy.
4. Plan and prioritise the scientific workload of the section on a day-to-day basis.
5. Provide a comprehensive and appropriate laboratory service to patients and staff.
6. Possess highly developed, advanced specialist scientific skills.
7. Ensure that the laboratory standard operational and health and safety policies are understood and carried out by all staff.
8. Responsible for the maintenance, condition, quality control, and record keeping of instruments and equipment associated with the section.
9. Adapt to new methodology or working practices when required.
10. Participate in and facilitate Quality Assurance, Audit, and clinical audit.
11. Be proactive in the generation and updating of standard operating procedures with appropriate documented change control.
12. Provide scientific advice and act as a resource both internally and externally.
13. Maintain an awareness of current developments especially with regard to special areas of responsibility.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
* HCPC Registration.
* MSc, FIBMS or equivalent in relevant discipline or demonstrable extensive relevant experience post HCPC registration in relevant discipline.
* Management training.
* IBMS Diploma of Expert or Advanced Practice in Histological Dissection.
* Evidence of ability to problem solve.
* Ability to work under pressure.
* Ability to plan and prioritise allocated work.
* Prepared to work with biological materials.
