We’re looking for an exceptional Infrastructure Engineer - Supercomputer Support to help us make a difference to our planet.
As our Infrastructure Engineer - Supercomputer Support, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Your world of expertise
You will be working as part of a team, providing support to our operational and research users to make the best use of our supercomputer environment.
* Support, monitor and manage the supercomputer users and systems which enable the running of our meteorological forecast and climate prediction models.
* Support the migration of operational, research & collaboration workloads from the Cray XC40 systems to the next-generation Cray EX systems hosted by Microsoft.
* Help lead the team as we make the new HPC operational, ensuring that it is optimised as we transition from build into to run.
* Assist the Met Office and its partners in the supercomputer project to deliver operational outcomes to stakeholders within and outside the Met Office.
* Work with Met Office Science and Technology to improve our services and deliverables and staying abreast of IT trends.

As our Infrastructure Engineer - Supercomputer Support your total reward package will be up to £49,806 annually, which includes:
* £33,794 base pay.
* An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%.
* Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) you will be paid £2,200 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills.
* Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave.
Essential Criteria, skills and experience:
1. Evidence of effective communication with team members and any other stakeholders of varying technical ability and understanding.
2. Proven analytical ability and leading problem-solving activity for complex technical issues in a multi-user environment.
3. Experience of system administration in a multi-user Linux environment or running and managing a high performance computing environment, catering for the needs of many users with a mixture of business critical and research workloads to deliver a high quality service. Ideally, using infrastructure as code, source code management and release management.
4. Experience working in a support environment to deliver a high quality service (such as ITIL change management or any other process for continuous improvement) and identify and implementing process improvements.
5. Experience contributing to development of best practice, mentoring junior engineers and producing and maintaining technical and process documentation.
