This post is part of the Estate Engineering Team, who work closely with a large range of suppliers and internal staff to provide technical guidance and to ensure that the university mechanical and electrical infrastructures are compliant & maintained to a high standard across an estate comprising Tutorial, Commercial and Student Residence spaces.
About the Role
The Building Services Engineer will work with our contractors, internal maintenance team and various stakeholders across the University of Derby’s portfolio to ensure a positive student experience whilst maintaining a safe environment for all. This Building Services Engineer role is a new role being created within the University of Derby’s Engineering department to accommodate for the expansion of our property portfolio over recent years.
This role will be working within a small but highly skilled team of engineers. The successful candidate will be responsible for the effective implementation of several service contracts (based on the successful candidate’s skillset and experience) to ensure ongoing compliance with relevant legislations. This will include operating our CAFM system to assist with the scheduling, safe systems of works and documentation of all maintenance works, remedial works and enhancement works. This role will be primarily based from the Kedleston Road Campus but will require occasional travel between sites. There will be no direct reports; however, the candidate will work closely with our internal maintenance team and our contractors to ensure the University of Derby’s building services continue to run safely and efficiently. The job holder will also be responsible for ensuring that the building services for new building developments are integrated into existing service contracts as part of a ‘soft landing’ process.
Core Duties:
1. Ensure compliance with all Statutory Regulations and legislation, pertinent to the work undertaken.
2. Ensure that the University of Derby complies with all relevant legislation regarding electrical or mechanical services.
3. Prepare or commission detailed documents, design specifications and drawings for tenders for issue either to the University workforce or external contractors.
4. Manage electrical or mechanical contracts; make alterations and improvements to specifications with regard to enhancing Student/Staff experience.
5. Provide technical support to the Engineering Team to assist in ensuring that the University sites and premises remain statutory compliant in accordance with the appropriate regulations to an approved standard.
6. Project management of minor works carried out by the University workforce and by external contractors.
7. Operate and update the CAFM system to record and track both planned maintenance & reactive works; schedule contractor works and arrange contractor site access.
8. Clerking and monitoring of works carried out by University workforce and external contractors in connection with service contracts and projects.
9. Prepare cost estimates for projects, for budgeting and planning.
10. Co-ordinate and administrate planned preventative maintenance schemes and contracts and ensure that all work undertaken by external contractors comply with relevant legislation as well as health and safety.
11. Act as an ‘authorised person’ for the issuing and control of high-risk permits of activities on all UoD sites.
12. Ensure that safe systems of work are initiated and complied with for all mechanical or electrical installations, maintenance and remedial work carried out within the University of Derby sites.
13. This role is part of the Estates department out of hours rota, providing a first response to urgent estates related issues, which occur outside the normal operating hours. On call rates will apply and be discussed at interview.
About You
The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of a wide range of building services systems and have in-depth experience of managing the maintenance of such systems and the relevant standards and regulations across the industry. We are asking the candidate to hold a building services engineering degree (CIBSE Approved) or equivalent relevant qualification in a building service-related subject (Building services / electrical / mechanical) OR Extensive equivalent experience in the building services sector. The candidate will be able to confidently manage contractors and fully understand the safe systems of work required in the facilities management sector is an essential requirement with supporting health and safety management qualifications. They will have experience working in higher education environments across a large estate providing maintenance in residential, commercial and industrial premises. The role requires somebody who can work both independently, as well as a part of a team to ensure works are seen through to completion.
They will be self-motivated; be able to prioritise their own workloads and be able to display excellent communication, organisational, IT and project management skills. A customer service ethos which matches the University’s values and behaviours is essential; outstanding communication, persuasion and influencing skills are a must, as is a drive for continuous improvement and a determination for excellence. You will demonstrate an ability and genuine interest in keeping abreast of the external environment with regards to relevant Building Services industry and higher education developments.

Salary: £42,791 to £45,955 for exceptional performers, there is scope for further progression up to £61,235 per annum.
