What's involved with this role: AD JOB TITLE: Legal Advisor Job Ref: Devon & Cornwall BL 365846 Pay Rate: £25.34 - £27.83 per hour PAYE, (Dependent on experience) c15% accrued holiday pension contribution Hours per week: 37 Monday – Friday, normal working hours Role Length: This opening assignment is for approx. 6 months City: Exeter Postcode: EX2 7HQ Preferred candidate will need to complete an Enhanced Medical Questionnaire Main Duties and Responsibilities As a Legal Officer, you will provide tactical and strategic legal advice across a broad range of issues within the Litigation, Operations, or Vulnerability teams. While primarily working within one team, you will also support other areas as needed. Advise and influence senior staff Manage a varied caseload, including civil claims, employment tribunals, inquests, misconduct hearings, and preventative orders. Provide real-time operational legal advice on policing matters, including protests, licensing, and safeguarding. Conduct legal research, prepare cases, and represent the Force in legal proceedings. Support officers in securing and enforcing preventative orders (e.g., Domestic Violence Protection Orders). Oversee general legal advice provided to staff, ensuring accuracy and compliance. Deliver training and contribute to legal updates, newsletters, and departmental projects. Represent the Force in multi-agency meetings and national legal committees. Supervise and mentor Paralegals and Legal Administrators, ensuring professional development and performance. Qualifications and Experience: Experience of handling contentious matters generally. A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of legal principles, legislation, case law, legal systems and police law. Ability to manage a considerable and diverse caseload providing clear advice. Ability to work in a highly pressurised environment and to be able to offer flexibility and advice within time constraints. Demonstrable ability to work effectively as part of a team. Strong communication skills, written and verbal, with the ability to liaise and influence at all levels, internal and external. Research and investigative skills with high attention to detail. Ability to think critically and adapt to changing circumstances in a fast-paced environment. IT literate with the ability to navigate specialist databases and systems.
