The haematology department currently has 5 DXH Beckman Coulter haematology analysers, 2 ACL TOP Werfen coagulation analysers, 2 Sebia capillary 3 analysers and 2 Benson viscometers.
The automation used in blood transfusion is Immucor, with a NEO Iris, Echo Lumena and an Echo V2 on-site. Electronic issue is the primary red cell issue method and the Trust uses the Haemonetics BloodTrack system across all fridges on the site.
Specialist assays such as PCR are also performed within Haematology.
The quality management software used is Ideagen v7.4. The department has UKAS accreditation to ISO15189 standard and supports surrounding private and community Hospitals.

Main duties of the job
* Performance of scientific and technical duties, as required, to the standard expected of a HCPC Biomedical Scientist
* Maintenance of personal and professional development in conjunction with the needs of the department and as required by HCPC
* To maintain registered status as a biomedical scientist with the HCPC Technical
* Work within Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in area of work, proposing changes to procedures when practices change in order to maintain a standard procedure for all staff. Via competency assessment to demonstrate a full understanding of the SOP
* Ensure that all analyses are performed to the highest standard using approved methods and Quality Control systems. This will require prolonged periods of concentration, such as reviewing a blood film looking down a microscope or during authorisation of a batch of results.
