Non-Executive Director, Thomas Telford Limited
Thomas Telford Ltd (TTL), the trading company of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has grown strongly over recent years and we have ambitious plans to accelerate our growth still further. We are looking for two new Non-Executive directors to join the Board to contribute to the achievement of our exciting strategic objectives.
TTL was created in 1971 by the ICE to provide additional income to support the Institution's charitable activities. It does this through a portfolio of products and services:
1. The NEC contracts and project management services, widely used for projects in the built environment in the UK and overseas.
2. A conference venue in the ICE's HQ building at One Great George Street, in the heart of Westminster.
3. ICE Training provides technical and non-technical skills development for ICE members and non-members, both online and face-to-face.
4. Our job-board provides online recruitment services for the Civil Engineering sector.
The Company has achieved strong growth in both turnover and profits in recent years. The ICE is supportive of the growth strategy and is encouraging the business to invest to support further growth.
We are part way through a digital transformation programme to capitalise on the increasing impact of digital workflow tools in the infrastructure sector and the continued growth of collaborative approaches to contracting. We are also experiencing unprecedented levels of interest in new export markets, creating exciting opportunities and challenges. We also continue to rebuild the One Great George Street venue post the enforced closure in 2020 and 2021 and the subsequent economic challenges in the hospitality industry.
All the profits from the business are donated to the ICE. The board has both Executive and Non-Executive Directors. The NEDs include both members and non-members of the ICE. We now have two vacancies for Non-Executive Directors to join the board for an initial period of 3 years.
The Candidate
We are seeking individuals with suitable experience to join the board and support the management team in delivering the strategy.
You will have significant strategic and leadership experience in the hospitality sector, in either a standalone or multi-site operation. You will have specific experience in addressing post pandemic challenges and opportunities in the sector and in making strategic decisions between different business development and business operations models. You should have a background in growing B2B and B2C business in new markets through innovative sales and marketing activities. While this experience is extremely important to the Board, the personal attributes of the candidate are paramount, and the individual must have:
* an open, honest, friendly, questioning and challenging approach;
* a leadership style and approach to doing business that fits with the company's values and principles;
* understanding and demonstrable experience of good corporate governance; and sympathy with the ethos and risk appetite of a not-for-profit shareholder.
Involvement
It is expected that board members attend 6-7 board meetings per annum. Regular board meetings are generally 3 hours in duration and there is a longer annual strategy day in February. Shorter ad hoc meetings may be held as needed during the year.
You may also be required to engage with the Directors and ICE trustees.
This is a modestly remunerated role (Non-Executive Directors are paid a day rate for board meetings) and reasonable expenses are reimbursed in line with ICE policy.
