Job Type: Full-Time
About Us
We’re a fast-growing, VC-backed AI startup based in Scotland, collaborating with top-tier organisations to craft and scale transformative AI solutions that drive real-world impact. We enable enterprises to solve the highest-value problems by distilling smaller, more focused Small Language Models (SLMs).
Our vision is to unlock the value of AI within enterprise environments by addressing complex problems that general AI cannot solve. Malted AI was born out of distillation techniques that helped founders win the 2022 Amazon Alexa Prize, where they beat more than 100 teams from around the globe. Since then, the team has raised £7m from leading Venture Capital firms and is helping enterprises deploy AI at scale.
Job Overview
We are seeking a curious, innovative and highly motivated Machine Learning Researcher to join our ML team. As a researcher, you will explore, prototype, and advance the boundaries of machine learning and AI technologies, contributing to our goal of developing state-of-the-art AI solutions. This role requires a deep technical background, a keen curiosity, and the ability to push the boundaries in areas such as Natural Language Processing, Knowledge distillation, reinforcement learning, and generative models.
Key Responsibilities
1. Conduct cutting-edge research in machine learning and AI, identifying novel approaches and methodologies for LLM-based solutions.
2. Develop experimental prototypes and proof-of-concept implementations to validate research ideas.
3. Design, implement, and optimise machine learning algorithms and models with a focus on scalability, robustness, and performance.
4. Collaborate on data collection, cleansing, and preprocessing to ensure high-quality datasets for model training and evaluation.
5. Work as a member of our research team pushing the boundaries for Malted AI, contributing to our thought leadership positioning.
6. Keep up with advances in machine learning and read recent publications to maintain a strong understanding of current AI trends and technologies.
Key Requirements
1. Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mathematics, or a related field.
2. Industry experience in AI research, machine learning, or data science, with a strong record of published work or contributions to open-source projects.
3. Strong programming skills in Python; familiarity with other languages such as C++ or Java is a plus.
4. Proficiency in machine learning libraries and frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn).
5. Experience with deep learning architectures (e.g., CNNs, RNNs, transformers), generative models, and reinforcement learning.
6. Collaboration and independent work experience with the ability to design and carry out experiments methodically, analyse results, and improve model performance.
7. Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively share findings with team members and present at conferences.
8. Must be eligible to work in the UK.
Preferred Requirements
1. Experience in areas such as NLP, or unsupervised learning.
2. Industry experience in the banking or financial services sectors.
3. Familiarity with cloud computing environments (AWS, GCP, Azure) and distributed computing.
4. Strong software engineering background.
5. Contributions to high-impact AI publications or patents.
How to Apply
If you are ready to join a pioneering AI company and contribute to its success, we invite you to apply and be a part of Malted AI's exciting journey.
Even if you feel that your background may not perfectly align with the described profile, we encourage you to apply if you possess a passion for technology and are eager to learn.
We believe in the potential for growth and development, and we are committed to providing support and resources to help you succeed in the role.
Our positions are available for individuals with a valid UK work permit; at our current stage, we aren't sponsoring visas.
Note: Malted AI is an equal opportunity employer, and we encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply.
We aren’t working with recruiters for these positions —we’re excited to connect directly with candidates who share our enthusiasm for small language models.
