Lathe and Turning Machine Setter/Operator Role Overview Responsible for producing machined parts by setting up, operating, and tending lathe and turning machines to turn, bore, thread, form, or face materials. The role includes maintaining quality and safety standards, keeping records, and ensuring equipment and supplies are well-maintained. Key Responsibilities 1. Setup and Operation Study engineering drawings and job orders to determine material requirements, machining specifications, and operational sequences. Plan machining activities in accordance with work orders and engineering drawings. Lift and position metal stock or workpieces manually or using crane hoists, securing them in machines. 2. Machining Process Adjust controls to set cutting speeds, depths, and feed rates, Thread Cutting, positioning tools relative to workpieces. Follow the machining process from start to finish to ensure part quality. Troubleshoot machining problems during operations to ensure effective procedures and results. 3. Quality Assurance Inspect workpieces to verify conformance with specifications using gauges, micrometers, and other precision instruments. Provide tooling and fixture improvement solutions as needed during machining processes. 4. Maintenance and Reporting Perform preventive and regular maintenance on machines, equipment, and tools per manufacturer’s instructions. Troubleshoot malfunctions and coordinate repairs when necessary. Complete all required documentation and reports for machining projects. Key Skills & Qualifications Proven experience operating lathes and turning machines. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documents. Proficiency with precision measuring instruments (e.g., gauges, micrometers). Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in machining processes.
