Senior Platform Engineer
What will you do?
As a Senior Platform Engineer, you will be responsible for contributing towards designing, building, maintaining and running high quality automated platforms and pipelines using the latest cloud technologies and automation tooling. You will follow and contribute to good design practices, standards, documentation and approaches to create scalable, secure & reusable platforms to meet business requirements.
This role will be working with our group business Toolstation, working exclusively on their GCP environment.
Some accountabilities of the role:
1. Contribute to the design, development and adoption of automated, scalable and secure cloud platforms and CI/CD pipelines for the strategic delivery of technology solutions. Contribute to proven design patterns for solving common business problems.
2. The engineer will contribute to the support and maintenance of any infrastructure or platform components to ensure they are operating within supported version and configuration envelopes in order to provide the safest and most secure environment possible.
3. Responsible for contributing and maintaining a catalogue of tools, standards, patterns and documents that support our use of our public cloud platforms. Adhere to architectural steering to maintain the highest standards of delivery across the team.
4. Serve as an initial escalation point for contribution towards resolution of the technical issues and queries for Cloud platforms and automation tooling.
5. Using the latest tooling contribute to the design and implementation of logging, monitoring, alerting, backup and DR solutions to be used in conjunction with deployed platforms from development all the way through to production to ensure an agreed level of service can be maintained.
6. Mentor, coach and contribute towards training other members of the team such as platform and support engineers to help build their skills and confidence. Provide technical guidance and ensure that quality, standards and best practices are adhered to.
7. Continuously assess and optimise the performance, security, and cost-effectiveness of the platform infrastructure. Contribute with decommissioning plans where systems/platforms are no longer required.
8. Proactively develop skills as required to support the fast-changing technology landscape and stay up to date with these technologies to help determine if they may be fit for purpose for consumption within the business.
What you’ll need to have/be:
1. GCSE’s + related A level or BTEC standard or L3 Apprenticeship.
2. 1-3+ years software development, operations infrastructure support or platform engineering.
3. Solid experience with CI/CD and/or GitOps toolsets, building automated pipelines and platforms in cloud as well as infrastructure deploy, build exposure.
4. Cloud Technology awareness - ideally AWS & GCP.
5. Good skills using at least one automation tool, Ansible, Terraform, AWS, GCP, Gitlab.
6. Deploying and supporting infrastructure using IAC.
7. Knowledge of both infrastructure and developer practices.
8. Understanding of pipelines and Continuous Integration.
9. Knowledge of supporting platform and infrastructure environments.
10. Keen attitude to learn and develop working alongside others.
