Assistant Director of Communications

The Assistant Director of Communications is a senior leadership position, holding responsibility for operational oversight of the Council's communications functions and, working with the Chief Marketing Offices and Assistant Director of Strategy, Brand and Impact, ensuring that our communications activity reflects and supports Newham's brand and strategic, proactive engagement priorities.
Your areas of responsibility and functional leadership include:
Internal communications lead the development and implementation of the Council's internal communications strategy, contributing to a step change in awareness, engagement and understanding among Newham colleagues of the Council, its vision, values, strategic priorities and of individual service area milestones. This contributes to a strengthened internal culture that motivates staff to maximise their performance, deliver the corporate plan Building a Fairer Newham, and become ambassadors for the Council.
Effectively and proactively managing media relations is fundamental to presenting the Borough in the best possible light, responding to and mitigating reputational risk, but also – crucially – showcasing positive and ground breaking initiatives, our regeneration programme, our leadership and the contribution of the Council workforce.
Production and content are responsible for developing innovative and creative assets, applying Newham brand guidelines, across digital, print, events, audio, and video for external and internal communications.
Key Tasks and Accountabilities
To provide professional expertise and advice to the Mayor, Members, the Chief Executive and senior officers on all areas of communications as required, and to effectively support the overall strategy of the Council and the delivery of the Corporate Plan.
Develop and implement the Council's communications strategy to actively deliver the communication elements of the Council's integrated campaigns through leadership of the work programmes across all communications disciplines (including media relations, social media, internal communications, and production and content).
Deliver effective results that achieve the goals of the integrated campaigns, improve the reputation of the Council and ensures residents, the Mayor, all members, staff and partners understand and fully engage with the Council's agenda.
Make certain research and evidence is used so the right message is delivered to the right people through the most appropriate channel.
Ensure through all communications channels that residents clearly hear the message they are at the heart of everything we do.
