Job Description:
My Client is a market leading engineering analysis business working across verticals such as Oil & Gas, Defence, Nuclear and Renewables. My Clients offer expertise in computational fluid dynamics, FEA, engineering dynamics, stress analysis, and structural calculations.
The tasks required of the Engineer are as follows but note that proficiency in all areas is not necessary before progression to ‘Senior’ level:
A) Technical
1. Decide the best approach to solving an engineering problem.
2. Model structures and components in order to determine and understand their behaviour under load.
3. Prepare free body diagrams.
4. Calculate deflections, stresses, strains and vibration characteristics for use in structural, fatigue or creep analyses.
5. Model fluid flow around/through/across solid bodies.
6. Calculate fluid velocities, pressure drops, drag forces.
7. Model heat transfer in order to calculate temperatures, power loss.
8. Prepare design concepts and model these.
9. Develop knowledge to use a variety of tools e.g. Mathcad, ANSYS Workbench, ANSYS Classic, ANSYS CFX, STAAD, Orcaflex, Excel, Pro Engineer.
10. Make recommendations for improving designs to meet specifications for mechanical integrity, performance, cost, weight.
11. Prepare clear and concise reports demonstrating compliance with customer’s and/or regulatory requirements.
B) Project
1. Take ownership of and responsibility for your analysis or design activity.
2. If working alone as the ‘Lead Engineer’, be responsible for delivering a project meeting customer expectations in terms of specification, quality, and timeliness.
3. Prepare Analysis Plans (or Design Specifications) and get these approved by the customer prior to commencing work.
4. Ensure there is a plan to address areas of uncertainty/ambiguity and follow this up until resolution.
5. Be responsible for organising the checking and approval of your work and for issuing final reports.
6. Monitor hours used on the project and check this against completed tasks.
7. Advise the Lead Engineer or Team Leader of any hardware-related or software-related resource constraints.
8. Prepare for design reviews as required by the PDL management team.
9. Ensure all documents and models are stored correctly prior to checking, approving, and archiving.
C) People
1. Maintain good working relationships and communications within PDL.
2. Organise your own time effectively.
3. Advise Lead Engineer or Engineering Team Leader of any people-related resource constraints.
4. Be willing to get involved in a range of ‘non-engineering’ tasks as required by the business.
5. Help new starters understand PDL procedures and tools.
D) Quality and Safety
1. Ensure adherence to the PDL Quality Management System.
2. Be aware of health and safety and recycling policies.
3. Know what to do if the fire alarm is heard or if first aid is required.
4. Ask questions if in doubt.
E) Sales and Marketing
1. Collate customer requirements, usually face-to-face.
2. Maintain regular contact with customers throughout the project.
3. Assist with the preparation of quotations.
4. Create presentations to promote PDL’s expertise and experience.
