Adaptimmune is a fully integrated cell therapy company, designed and built from the ground up with four U.K.- and U.S.-based biotechnology hub locations. Our comprehensive capabilities and teams include preclinical research, clinical development, translational sciences, autologous and allogeneic manufacturing, and in-house commercial and corporate operations.
Our company culture is rooted in trust, inclusion, our capacity to collaborate, and our commitment to being honest and brave in our desire to successfully transform the lives of people with cancer.
Primary Responsibility
Functional focus: The Autologous T-cell Process and Analytical Development team is concerned with the development, characterization, improvement and automation of Adaptimmune’s SPEAR T cell manufacturing process and the associated analytical procedures. Process development is assessed and evaluated through analysis of cell products from various stages within the manufacturing process, by characterization in biochemical, phenotypical and functional assays. Process changes are then tech transferred to our global manufacturing teams.
The purpose of this role is to provide Process engineering technical expertise on cross-functional projects including process scaling and mathematical modelling to study various process parameters, process characterization, process improvement, technology transfer and new product and process introduction. The candidate will be expected to design, execute and analyze experiments in the laboratory within a team setting.
The Senior Scientist will coordinate and drive the progression of Autologous T cell Process Development work streams to solve complex problems and/or troubleshoot existing processes, within dedicated teams.
Key Responsibilities
* In partnership with the Principal Scientist and other SMEs for Process and Analytical Development, designing and conducting experiments appropriate for the individual function and/or discipline to enable group and/or project objectives.
* Analyze, summarize, record and communicate experimental results.
* Active participation in group and project meetings and discussions.
* Supervision/mentorship of scientists, and work-stream leadership/management.
* Contribute to routine lab maintenance.
Occasional travel for tech transfer and cross-training purposes may be required.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
* Degree in Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
* Relevant post-graduate experience within academic or industry setting, preferably including an MSc or PhD in a relevant area.
* Experience in engineering application and process development in cell therapy.
* Substantial experience in aseptic cell culture, bioreactors for culturing cells, ideally large-scale and/or with primary human T-cells.
* Engineering applications within the design and characterization of cell manufacturing processes, study of manufacturing process parameters using DoE and mathematical modelling of biological and biochemical aspects of cell manufacturing processes.
* Ability to work independently on routine experiments, after training.
* Ability to learn and develop to work independently on complex experiments within a reasonable time frame.
Desirable
* An in depth understanding of the relevant scientific area (T-cell biology).
* Chartered member or working towards chartership of a Professional Engineering Institution, such as IChemE.
* Practical experience in cell biology assays.
* GMP/GLP experience.
* Scientific project and/or people leadership experience.
