Persistent and severe absence from school is having a huge impact on the education and life outcomes of young people across the UK. Absence rates are too high, and we want to provide structured support to get young people back into the classroom.
It is our mission is to provide mentorship support to persistently absent secondary school students across 10 areas within the UK. We are seeking individuals passionate about supporting young people, through mentorship, to achieve better attendance outcomes.
The Opportunity
As an Attendance Mentor you will manage a caseload of pupils, developing a trusting relationship to provide mentoring support to severely or persistently absent pupils, in a school setting, with the clear aim of improving their individual attendance rates.
This will involve working with each pupil’s caregivers and school to understand the barriers to attendance and creating practical action plans to improve attendance.
In addition, key aspects of the role include (but are not limited to) the following:
* Creating a meaningful action plan, outlining practical support measures, actions, and goals
* Providing a credible presence to area stakeholders, including schools and other local partners
* Following key administrative and data process to capture and record important project information
* Working closely with school staff (and other stakeholders) to ensure cohesive and holistic pupil approaches are in place.
* Undertaking all CPD required for the mentor role including a Level 3 qualification;
* Improving school attendance for those that you mentor.
The Person
Successful candidates will have prior experience in Mentorship and/or School Attendance barrier programmes, along with a working knowledge and experience in safeguarding practice. However, we are very keen to speak with those from a variety of related backgrounds (as full training will be provided): for example, school support staff and youth workers.
Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential for this role. Not only as a cornerstone of mentorship, but to support collaborative working with pupils, schools, families, and other key stakeholders.
Additionally, excellent oral and written communication skills, including report writing, and the ability to plan and prioritise effectively to meet deadlines and targets, are essential too.
