Job Title: Maintenance Electrician Apprentice Location: Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, DG2 8RX Working Week: Full-time, Monday – Friday Apprenticeship Qualifications: Level 7 Electrical Installation Expected Apprenticeship Duration: 48 months Serco have an exciting new apprenticeship role as a Maintenance Electrician Apprentice to join the fantastic team at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. As the apprentice, you will work as a member of Serco’s Hard FM Team at Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary and through relevant training and support will contribute to the delivery of a high-quality Hard FM service across a range of new build and refurbishment tasks and projects within an NHS hospital environment. The broad purpose of the role is to contribute to the delivery of a safe and secure environment for the patients, staff, and visitors at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. This must be achieved through compliance with health and safety, environmental, sustainability and building regulations and standards including specific healthcare requirements. Additionally, work must be completed safely in line with company procedures and priorities, within agreed timescales, and with minimal disruption to critical health services and within budgets. Key responsibilities: During the apprenticeship, the apprentice will have exposure to and learn many of the following: Critical theatre ventilation systems Life-critical medical electrical distribution for healthcare with back-up generators - Isolated Power Supply (IPS) and Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Medical gas pipeline systems and medical air and vacuum Critical resilience back-up systems Hot and cold-water systems Lifts (safety checks and safe rescue) and patient hoists Nurse call systems Fire safety systems Heat, light and power systems, including boilers Energy management systems Catering equipment maintenance Security equipment maintenance General building services systems (lighting, power and heating and ventilation systems). The responsibilities and duties as stated below are not a definitive or exhaustive list but identify the key responsibilities and tasks of the apprentice; the apprentice will be expected to undertake any other ad hoc duties as requested by a member of the Serco Supervisory/Management team and within the scope of their developing skill, knowledge and capability as they progress through the SCQF Level 7 SECTT Electrical Apprenticeship. Customer Focus Provide a high standard Hard FM service within the healthcare environment to patients, staff, and users within the hospital to comply with statutory and regulatory requirements, Service Level specifications, manufacturer guidelines and Serco Standard Operating Procedures. Demonstrate high standards of courteous interaction with all individuals, including patients, visitors, Trust staff and Serco colleagues. This includes being able to use a range of communication techniques; verbal, written and electronic and matching personal style to audience as required. Demonstrate the principles of Diversity and Inclusion, the importance of cultural awareness and implications for the role. Use judgement and empathy to ensure appropriate and supportive communication to enhance the reputation of Serco, working in conjunction with other Serco colleagues as required. Organise, co-ordinate and action work to meet stakeholder requirements and priorities, including maintaining continuity of service and improve service, sensitive to the clinical environment. Operational Excellence Demonstrate a range of fundamental skills including the interpretation of technical specifications and drawings, Conduct a broad range of planned maintenance tasks including site surveys in accordance with agreed timescales. This will include arranging access to the ward or department if so required, keeping stakeholders informed of their work status and completing all associated documentation both prior (including obtaining permit(s) to work) to ensure that record keeping (manual and/or electronic) is fully compliant with stated policies, procedures, and other requirements. Respond to reactive maintenance issues, including carrying out repairs, fault finding, servicing commissioning and maintenance, seeking to support the return of plant, building services and systems back to being fully operational at the earliest opportunity. This will include keeping Hard FM Leads updated, and stakeholders informed of their work status and completing all associated documentation to ensure that record keeping is fully compliant with stated policies, procedures, and other requirements. Support and contribute to ‘Continuous Improvement’ in the healthcare Hard FM function to maintain/improve both quality and efficiencies, ensuring the service remains at the forefront with regards to new ways of working, including the use of new equipment and technology. To work in a safe and responsible manner with full regard for own and other’s safety at all times. This includes demonstrating good housekeeping practices within all areas of work relating to machinery, tools, equipment, and safe storage. To be prepared to attend work or work beyond expected finishing time in exceptional circumstances, as requested by Supervisors or Managers To be aware of how each role within the Hard FM Service influences Serco’s Contract at the employing hospital site, and the wider Health business unit and company objectives. What you’ll need to do the role: Typically, GCSE grade 4 or above Mathematics and English Good communication skills to ensure effective interactions with colleagues, supervision, patients, visitors, and Trust staff. Able to balance conflicting priorities to ensure effective service delivery Able to work within a healthcare environment, understanding that there will be occasions of distress, deterioration, and bereavement. Able to satisfactorily undertake and complete all mandatory and statutory training as well as any other personal development identified to improve knowledge, skills and behaviours as outlined within the National Apprenticeship Standard. Attention to detail. Additional Features Able to pass Occupational Health Screening and Colour Vision Assessment The role is physical and there will be a requirement to be mobile for most of the working period; this will include walking long distances to various locations across the hospital site repeatedly during the working day. Additionally, large and heavy objects will need to be moved, using the correct Manual Handling techniques and/or appropriate lifting equipment. Required to wear and appropriately use a range of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including specialist healthcare PPE as appropriate. Ability to concentrate on tasks, think clearly under pressure and work with limited supervision (dependent upon stage of apprenticeship). Correctly apply the principles of hygiene to the role i.e. clean uniform, hand hygiene and cross contamination. Apply bare below the elbow (BBE) process. Demonstrate a flexible approach e.g. when asked to change tasks/routine(s). Work to become multi-skilled and demonstrate flexibility when undertaking all activities. Work Environment Requirements Demonstrate a good general level of awareness about the nature of working within a healthcare environment; there can be many emotional and psychological demands arising from interacting with a variety of people and situations in the work area(s), which will vary from day to day. Dignity, respect, and professionalism are key behaviours required. Display resilience and emotional intelligence to read and appropriately respond to the situation at hand, escalating to more experienced colleagues as and when required for support. Work under pressure to tight details whilst maintaining a professional image; this will include balancing conflicting priorities to complete work to schedule.
