Role Outline:
This is an exciting opportunity to develop a technical area within Tetra Tech’s UK-based Ecology team whilst collaborating and being supported by technical experts from across the business. The Technical Director will lead a technical specialism to achieve commercial objectives and provide exceptional levels of service to our clients, reinforcing Tetra Tech’s reputation as a centre of excellence by Leading with Science®. They will use their skills and experience to lead and contribute to strategic plans for growth, focusing on client relationships, collaboration and staff development. They will lead, manage and mentor staff to align the team with commercial objectives.
The key features for this role include being an expert in a specific technical area with the ability to generate opportunities and tender documents, with project management experience (from enquiry to completion), and the confidence to develop client relationships. As a multidisciplinary consultancy, we work closely with colleagues from other teams including Planning, Placemaking, Engineering, Transportation and Asset Management, and the Technical Director will work on a broad spectrum of projects and liaise with other teams on a regular basis. You will have the ability to think on your feet, steer the direction of the technical team and inform the long-term goals of the national Ecology team and wider business. The Technical Director will:
·Where appropriate for the technical specialism, meet the requirements of the capable, and preferably accomplished, competencies in line with the CIEEM Competency Framework guide.
·Lead the development of technical excellence and solutions based on relevant best practice and research, including knowledge sharing across the national ecology team.
·Supervise and review the development of standard technical solutions and verify that outputs meet expected quality standards.
·Contribute to the development of a strategy to develop opportunities for the technical area including identifying links between research-based projects and generating work for the wider team.
·Contribute to planning committees, inquiries and Expert Witness evidence.
·Manage projects including scope, cost/revenue budgets, third party deliverables and change control, WIP, invoicing and debt.
·Be able to negotiate and discuss fees and Terms and Conditions, bespoke contracts and warranties (with support from our inhouse legal team) as appropriate.
·Have demonstrable experience of fulfilling task timescales and achieving deadlines with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and third parties regarding risks and potential issues.
·Complete Tetra Tech’s Project Management training to Level 2.
·Have line management responsibility including timesheet signoff, pastoral care and duty of care where appropriate for the technical specialism.
·Lead the mentoring and development of staff in line with strategic goals for the technical specialism.
·Be involved with business development activity including having an awareness of market conditions, opportunities and competition for the technical specialism and the identification and delivery of opportunities with new and existing clients.
·Chartered member of an appropriate professional body and 10 years equivalent experience.
·Hold a full driving licence.
Flexible Working:
We operate fully flexible, hybrid working which allows our Environmental specialists to choose where, how and when they work as long as our clients are receiving the high-quality service they expect. We focus on talent and skills, not postcode. The role will require working closely with the Ecology leadership team, national Ecology team, mentoring and managing other consultants and developing relationships with clients and colleagues so may require some time at an office or alternative working space to suit those involved.
