The fellowship is a clinical and research training position for a period of 12 months. During this time, the fellow will work under the supervision of the MRC Lead. You will also have the availability to cover lists with all four of the consultants that cover arthroplasty and revision knee surgery.
The aim of the fellowship is to prepare the individual for a sub-specialist career in complex knee surgery, and it is expected that by the end of the fellowship, the fellow should be able to plan and independently execute knee arthroplasty cases. There will also be exposure to primary and revision arthroplasty surgery, as well as unicompartmental arthroplasty and osteotomy. Fellows also have a commitment to the general orthopaedic trauma on-call rota, sharing an on-call position amongst the middle grade.
The Fellow is responsible for the daily assessment of all in-patients of his/her named Consultant at the EOC and should inform the Consultant if any problems arise.
There is a training Registrar attached to the Unit and ward-based junior trainees. The Registrar is given prime responsibility for the daily assessment of trauma in-patients but will also be involved with clinical work on the Knee Unit. When the Fellow is away, he/she should liaise closely with the ward doctors and Registrar on the Knee Unit to troubleshoot problems for all firms and to contact the responsible Consultant in the event that a problem arises.
Inpatient trauma surgery is carried out on 2 sites: the William Harvey Hospital (Ashford) and The Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital (Margate). Elective surgery is carried out at the Elective Orthopaedic Centre (EOC) at Kent and Canterbury Hospital (Canterbury). Day case surgery is performed at all three of the sites above. Outpatient clinics are held at all the above sites, cottage hospitals, and GP Surgery at Folkestone, Dover, Deal, and Estuary View, Whitstable.
We offer 27 days’ annual leave and active support for study, quality improvement, and patient safety work as part of our ‘We care’ improvement journey, as well as medical education and research.
