Building Safety and Maintenance Inspector

About the Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented Building Safety Inspector to oversee essential safety systems and compliance across our facilities. This position would be ideal for someone with a background in building maintenance, such as a caretaker or tradesperson, who is looking for a role with less hands-on maintenance but still plays a critical part in ensuring safety standards are met.
You will be responsible for regular inspections, testing, and reporting on fire safety and emergency systems, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Your work will be vital in maintaining a safe environment for all occupants.
Key Responsibilities
Routine Inspections & Testing
1. Fire Alarm System Checks (Weekly) – Conduct and log routine fire alarm tests, promptly reporting any faults.
2. Emergency Exit & Fire Route Checks (Weekly) – Ensure all exits are accessible, functional, and compliant with safety standards.
3. Water System Safety (Weekly, where applicable) – Flush little-used outlets to maintain water hygiene and reduce health risks.
4. Lift Monitoring System Tests (Weekly) – Confirm correct operation and report any faults to maintenance teams.
5. Defibrillator Inspections (Weekly) – Verify accessibility and readiness of emergency defibrillators.
6. Disabled Toilet Emergency Cord Testing (Weekly) – Check functionality and compliance with safety regulations.
7. Refuge Area Assessments (Weekly) – Inspect designated refuge areas for compliance and safety.
8. Automatic Window/Vent Testing (Weekly) – Ensure proper operation of smoke ventilation mechanisms.
9. Sheltered Accommodation Fire Alarm Tests (Weekly) – Conduct and document system checks.
10. Fire door Safety inspections.
Monthly Safety Checks
1. Fire Blanket Inspections – Assess condition and ensure accessibility in case of emergencies.
2. Evacuation Chair Checks – Verify they are operational and ready for emergency use.
3. Emergency Lighting Assessments – Test for functionality to guarantee illumination during power failures.
4. First Aid Kit Audits – Inspect supplies and replenish as needed.
5. Fire Extinguisher Inspections – Check pressure levels, overall condition, and arrange servicing if required.
6. Misting System Tests – Ensure proper functionality as part of fire suppression measures.
Skills & Experience Required
1. Experience in building inspections, maintenance, or a similar role.
2. Good computer and record keeping skills.
3. Strong knowledge of fire safety and emergency system requirements.
4. Attention to detail and ability to identify potential risks.
5. Good organizational skills with effective time management.
6. Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical systems.
7. Valid UK driving licence.
8. Relevant qualifications in fire safety, first aid, or building compliance (preferred).
This position involves physical inspections, including working at heights and using safety equipment. Travel between sites will be required.
