An excellent opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Clinical Fellow (Registrar level) to join the Trust on a 12-month fixed term contract working within the Microbiology & Infection team based at hospital site.
Typical duties include Clinical Microbiology/Infection consultations, liaison & advice, daily infection ward rounds, laboratory bench rounds, report authorisation, infection prevention & control liaison, antimicrobial stewardship activities/ward rounds as part of the Microbiology/ Infection team, under the supervision of a duty consultant.
The appointee will be expected to attend and actively participate in Departmental and other teaching sessions. It is expected that the appointee will assist with the teaching of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate junior doctors. This post provides a broad experience in the clinical management of Infection. Previous appointees have progressed from this post to further their careers in Infection Specialty roles.
Main Duties of the Job
The laboratory operates a 7-day service: standard hours are 09:00-17:00 Monday-Friday, with laboratory presence until 21:00. On weekends and bank holidays, standard hours of 09:00-17:00 apply. Out-of-hours service is managed by on-call state-registered Biomedical Scientists.
Clinical/Operational Responsibilities:
1. Provide microbiology & infection consultations, ward liaison, and advice, with a ~2-week induction period based on experience.
2. Participate in infection ward rounds (Bacteraemia, ITU/HDU, MRU, C. diff) and MDTs (Haematology, Diabetic Foot, Orthopaedic).
3. Prescribe or amend antimicrobials after discussing with the duty Microbiologist.
4. Authorise laboratory reports under consultant supervision.
5. Conduct antimicrobial stewardship activities, including audits and guidance development.
6. Gain infection control placement and virology experience.
Communication:
1. Engage with primary and secondary care clinicians and health workers through verbal, written, and electronic forms.
2. Ensure clear, legible documentation in medical notes and IT systems (e.g., laboratory management systems, electronic patient records).
3. Coordinate with lab staff, nurses, ward staff, and pharmacists. Seek guidance from senior colleagues when required and communicate clearly with patients and families.

Experience
Essential
* Clinical microbiology or Infectious disease experience
* Have evidence that their present level of achievement and performance is commensurate with the totality of their period of training.
* Demonstrate an appropriate knowledge base.
* Ability to apply sound clinical judgements to problems.
* Experience of Microbiology & Infection patient management
* Experience of laboratory work - including research relevant to medical microbiology or virology
Desirable
* Experience of Educational Supervision, teaching skills, developing Infection or Microbiology teaching and training programmes
* Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements e.g., prizes, awards, publications etc.
* Experience of the practice of clinical governance and audit - specialist and multidisciplinary
* Experience of clinical specialties where there is a significant component of infection, including infectious diseases, haematology/ oncology or ITU or HDU
* Knowledge of specialist areas such as infection control
* Publications in peer review publications
* Presentations or Posters at conferences
Qualifications
Essential
* MBBS/MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
* Full GMC registration
* Evidence of completion of CMT or equivalent
* FRCPath part 1 or equivalent
Desirable
* MRCP or equivalent
* General medicine experience
* Infection/microbiology related qualification, e.g., Diploma in Medical Microbiology, MSc in Microbiology, DTM&H
* Evidence of continuing professional updating
