Specialty Doctor in ENT (GP with Specialist Interest)

Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides acute services for the City of Bradford and surrounding areas, and has two large Hospitals; Bradford Royal Infirmary and St. Luke's Hospital. All main specialties are represented in Bradford, and the Trust has a bed base of approximately 1061 beds.

Main duties of the job
1. Assessment, investigation and treatment of patients referred to the service.
2. Provision of a range of clinical interventions as appropriate to the commissioned service (e.g. microsuction, flexible nasendoscopy, audiology etc.).
3. Links with other services to ensure that the full holistic needs of the patient are met (e.g. audiologist & hearing aid services, vestibular physiotherapy, speech and language services etc.).
4. The knowledge to signpost patients to other support services, including local and national patient support groups.
5. Provision of advice and support to local practitioners through non-face-to-face contact (e.g. telephone, internet) in the management of those ENT conditions within the expertise of the GPSI.
6. Provision of support and training to GPs and members of the primary healthcare team in the management of common ENT conditions to enable other clinicians to develop, maintain and improve their level of clinical competence in the management of ENT conditions. The process of education should be supported through commissioning pathways.
7. Liaise with and provide support for other ENT GPSI's in the area and via Community ENT Group nationally.
8. As part of a well-integrated service, GPSI's should have good access to and support from secondary care specialist services.

Work with local secondary care specialists and other groups managing ENT conditions (e.g. audiologist & hearing aid services, vestibular physiotherapy, speech and language services etc.) to develop an integrated ENT service model that facilitates streamlined care pathways linked to the healthcare needs of the local community.
6. In collaboration with other members of the local health community (e.g. GPs, practice nurses, extended primary care team (paramedics, community pharmacists, physicians associates for example), pharmacists, health visitors, school nurses), develop and implement management guidance in the care of common ENT conditions.
7. Become involved in integrated training programmes across primary and secondary care for medical, nursing staff and extended primary care team members.
8. Work with patients, the public and service providers to support an integrated, patient centred approach to commissioning services.
Person Specification
Experience
* Previous experience relevant to the specialty.
* Clinical governance / audit experience.
* Out of hours experience relevant to job.
* Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk.
* Minimum of four years (FTE or equivalent) postgraduate training in the UK (or equivalent EEA training) of which at least 2 years training must be in the relevant specialty or a recognised equivalent training. Applicant knowledge is up to date and is fit to practise safely. Commitment for managing professional development.

* Empathy and sensitivity.
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following: - that applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English; or - have achieved the following scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application - Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 7. IELTS certificate to be presented at interview. If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence.

* Specialist Knowledge Exam.
* ALS Instructors Certificate.
Qualifications
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment.
* Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by the time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice.
* Evidence of achievement of ST1 / CT1 competencies in the specialty at time of application and likelihood of achieving ST2 / CT2 competences in specialty by the start date of the post [In some specialties this level of specialty or core training may not provide the right skills to perform effectively in a specialty doctor post].
* Specialty specific requirements eg MRCP, FRCS, etc where appropriate.
