This role is to ensure that the design intent is effectively managed through review, interrogation and management of the design during pre-construction and on live projects.
This role requires time being spent between project sites and the head office in Derbyshire / Regional Offices.
Ideally, the design manager will have a degree or equivalent in a relevant construction-related discipline with a strong design/project delivery background.
Responsibilities
1. Full management of the Design Team throughout a project and during the full construction process, often on multiple projects, to maximize opportunities and mitigate risks.
2. Effective management of the design process.
3. Ensuring all design requirements & details are accurate and circulated.
4. Effective document control.
5. Effective management of the wider design team.
6. Experience in managing multi-disciplinary teams and specialist design sub-contractors.
7. Undertake design review and option analysis, providing Value Engineering input where applicable.
8. Interrogation of tender and construction stage quotations and management of subcontractor workshops.
9. Identify viable VE opportunities.
10. Detailed understanding of construction technology and buildability and tender design requirements.
11. Effective management of meetings.
12. Strong technical background and understanding of cost control, detailed design, program, and contractual requirements.
13. High-quality presentations and submissions, meeting tight deadlines.
14. Operate design management with a high level of technical understanding alongside contractual, commercial, and program awareness.
15. Input into high-quality tender, prequalification, and contractors' proposal submissions.
16. Develop and manage the RFI and change process alongside document control requirements.
17. Manage the design relationship between the Client, Design Consultants, designing subcontractors, and statutory bodies.
18. Define, record, and manage the scope of duties of each design consultant and subcontractor.
19. Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations.
20. Participate in the collation and handover of completed design records to the Client.
21. Management of all statutory requirements such as planning and Building Control.
22. Understanding of BREEAM, SBEM, DfP, Embodied Carbon, and Building Control requirements.
23. Management of the BIM process.
24. Chairing of clash detection meetings.
25. Ensure design team reviews are completed at regular intervals.
26. Participate in lessons learned forums throughout construction and post-project reviews.
27. Agree and action a handover process to ensure that all design-related matters are up to date and current.
28. Support the wellbeing of B&K staff and wider project team members.
29. Support the ongoing development of team members through the PDR/Mentoring process.
30. Any other duties associated with this position that contribute to individual development.
Qualifications
1. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
2. Attention to detail and ability to work under pressure to deadlines.
3. Knowledge and experience in tendering and preconstruction.
4. Strong ICT skills and experience using web-based portal systems.
5. A qualification in BREEAM is not a requirement but a detailed understanding would be beneficial.
