A vacancy has arisen for a Competence Development Specialist. In this role, you will contribute to the day-to-day running of UK rail operations, with a focus on the competence monitoring, development, and assessment of the rail operations team, principally train drivers. This role includes an on-call commitment. Key Responsibilities: • Driver Assessment: Deliver the highest standards in the driver assessment process, aligning with business requirements. • Training & Development: Provide timely training and continuous development to ensure all drivers meet necessary competencies and standards. • Assessment Plan Delivery: Ensure the assessment plan is delivered within strict timescales, focusing on continuous improvement. • Record Management: Complete and act upon all records related to the competence assessment process. • Instructor & Mentor Training: Ensure driver instructors and mentor drivers are trained, briefed, and equipped to perform their roles effectively. • Personal Competence: Retain personal train driving competencies and comply with internal and external standards. • Competence Records: Maintain competence records, certification, and route knowledge within EDS, ensuring all staff are within competence. • Investigations: Undertake investigations using Root Cause Analysis and interpret Qtron data recorder information Ensure a positive safety culture is developed within your area of responsibility, which is supported by robust safety processes in accordance with company, industry standards and legislation. Key Job Requirements Experience of managing people within a rail operational environment Experience of working with unions at local level Must live within 60 minutes of the Rugby depot Competencies / Qualifications: • Railway Operations Knowledge: Thorough understanding of safe and efficient railway operations, including operating instructions, policies, procedures, rule book, and railway standards. • Freight Experience: Previous freight experience is preferable but not essential. • Class 66 Traction Competence: Preferred. • Route Knowledge: Competent driver route knowledge in the areas of Rugby and Bedford station • Practical Experience: At least 5 years’ recent practical experience driving trains; competent and medically capable of driving trains. • Training & Assessing Qualifications: Industry-standard training qualifications and Level 3 NVQ Assessing & Instructing. • IT Proficiency: Good knowledge of Microsoft packages and ability to use and interpret data from job-related software (e.g., TOPS/ERIC/Qtron). • Report Writing: Ability to write concise, factual-based reports with clear recommendations based on factual evidence. • Interpersonal Skills: Diligent, self-motivated, with strong interpersonal and effective people management skills. • Driving Licence: Hold a full UK driving licence.
