We are looking for bank carers to cover our existing carers annual leave and
sickness. We have 7 permanent carers so there will be the opportunity for quite a
lot of shifts throughout the year. In future this could lead to regular shifts. The role
is caring for two brothers (aged 21 and 25) who have Duchenne muscular
dystrophy and are wheelchair users. The younger of the two is also autistic (verbal
but shy) The shifts would be day or night depending on the cover needed. Ideally,
we are looking for someone who has experience with complex care and hoisting.
The role involves all personal care and shadow shifts/ training will be given to help
you and the boys feel comfortable with each other.
Most of the shifts are 1 :2 i.e. caring for both boys at the same time (they are used
to sharing one carer and it works well as one likes company and the other
doesn't!) Ideally looking for cheerful and kind people with a good sense of humour.
Some shifts might involve driving to football matches or meals out with friends.
Both boys are very keen football fans and support Brighton and Hove Albion. They
like to get to as many matches as possible so if you're happy to drive our van that
would be a bonus although not essential as we always have two carers going with
them.
As the boys will soon be living independently from their parents, we are
encouraging them both to take more control over their lives and be less reliant on
Mum. We want them to feel a sense of achievement and normality to what is a
challenging life, even if that is something as simple as what to have for dinner! It
would be great if you feel you could help them with this next step
